Unknown Device (Code 28) - All Network Drivers (Code 31)

I'm trying to fix a problem with my Dad's computer, he advised that he couldn't connect to the internet anymore. When I took a look, the Network icon in the system tray says 'Not Connected - No Connections Available'.

After alot of faffing and searching on the net, I stumbled across the Device Manager and found that all of the Network Drivers have a Code 31 error. Then I noticed below these, that there is another error for an 'Unknown Device' which has a Code 28 error. On the Details tab in Properties for the Unknown Device, the Values state '00000040' and 'CONFIGFLAG_FAILEDINSTALL'.

Everything was working fine before, please can someone point me in the right direction?

I have attempted to update the Network Drivers to no avail. Obviously I would try to update the 'Unknown Device' if I knew what an earth it was!

Thank you very much in advance.

The computer is a Dell Vostro 1015 laptop with Windows 7.

    Hi,

    • Were there any changes to your dad's computer because of which the issue started?

I'd suggest you to follow these steps and check if the issue persists.

    Step 1:

    Uninstall and reinstall network adapters.

    a. Click Start, type Device Manager in the Start search box and hit Enter.

    b. Locate Network adapters and expand the same.

    c. Select the wireless connection, right-click and select Uninstall.

    d. Restart the computer, if prompted.

Drivers should get installed automatically after restarting the computer.

Now, you may install the latest network adapter drivers and check if that fixes the issue.

Refer the following Microsoft article for more information on updating drivers:

    Step 2:

Perform system restore to the point your computer was functioning normally.

    Hi magjoseki738,

Can you locate the "Unknown Device" in the Device Manager and right-click the device > Properties > Details, then choose "Device Instance Path" from the drop-down menu under "Property".

    What is listed?

On the deviceS and printers page, the  PICTURE OF THE computer itself bears a "?"

The drop down menus under Property is:

    ConfigFlags

    and under Value is :

    0000040

    CONFIGFLAG_FAILEDINSTALL

    Device Status

The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)

There is no driver selected for the device information set or element.

To find a driver for this device, click Update Driver.

Hi, thank you for your reply.

I was assuming an update was made on the computer but it must have been automatic rather than manual, as my Dad wouldn't attempt something like that on his own!

I've tried the first step as stated:-

    a. Click Start, type Device Manager in the Start search box and hit Enter.

    Fine

    b. Locate Network adapters and expand the same.

    Fine

    c. Select the wireless connection, right-click and select Uninstall.

PROBLEM - I did this, a pop-up appeared 'Confirm Device Uninstall' I clicked OK and then it disappeared and I was left staring at the Device Manager screen again. It does not appear to have worked! I tried the same process several times with the same result.

I also restarted the laptop just incase and the 'Dell Wireless 1702 802.11b/g/n' is still shown under the network adapters in Device Manager.

    Any ideas???

    What is listed under "Value"?

I have done as you have advised - Device Manager - Right Click Unknown Device - Proberties - Details tab - BUT....

In the drop down under 'Property' there is no 'Hardware IDs'. The list consists of:-

    ConfigFlags

    Physical Device Object Name

    Capabilities

    Enumerator

    Power data

    Removal policy

    Removal policy default

    Install state

    Base Container ID

    Device Instance Path

    DevNode status

    Problem code

    Parent

    Siblings

    Container ID

    Safe Removal Required

    Install Error

    Install Date

    First Install Date

    Class long name

    Class short name

    Class icon path

    Lower logo version

    Display name

    Any of the above instead????

    Thank you for your help.
