I tried to fix with windows fix, with Microsoft debug, with tweaking. No result.

Hi,

let's start off with some troubleshooting to work on this issue. As Gerry explained in detail, the causes and possible solutions for the issue we will now need to get the Windows Update functionality to working state.

Here are some methods to try:

Method 1:

Step 1:

How do I reset Windows Update components?

The article also includes steps to Manually reset Windows Update components. Do read through the notes mentioned here performing the steps.

Important  Follow the steps in this section carefully. Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Before you modify it, back up the registry for restoration

(http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322756/ ) in case problems occur.

Step 2:

The next step would be to run the System Update Readiness Tool.

What is the System Update Readiness Tool?

Also refer, http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=20858

Method 2:

System File Checker is a utility in Windows that allows users to scan for corruptions in Windows system files and restore corrupted files.

Use the System File Checker tool to repair missing or corrupted system files

Method 3:

Some users have confirmed that performing a clean boot also helps. A clean boot is performed to start Windows by using a minimal set of drivers and startup programs. This helps eliminate software conflicts that occur when you install a program or an update or when you run a program in Windows 8.1, Windows 8, Windows 7, or Windows Vista. You may also troubleshoot or determine what conflict is causing the problem by performing a clean boot.

How to perform a clean boot in Windows

Important: Do refer section- How to reset the computer to start normally after clean boot troubleshooting after you perform clean boot.

Here is an articlediscussing a simillar issue

Keep us informed on the status of the issue after performing the steps. We will be glad to assist.

Did the first step and it returned the 4th scenario - could not fix all. It is 27th July 2016 and I only have 2 days to resolve this on the free Windows 10 upgrade - will I be able to continue this process for free or will I then have to stay on Windows 8/8.1 as I do not have available time to resolve in the next 2 days. I had complete lock-out - no keyboard etc ... last time (a number of months ago when I tried to upgrade - an issue with Sony Vaio's)

Experiencing this same problem when attempting to update to Windows 10 on my 7 computer.

I have tried all of the steps listed in the answer, but they have all resulted in an error. My Windows update screen still looks like this:

After running the Windows update fix components application, I was notified that this error was not fixed.

Running the System Update readiness tool yielded this additional error:

Then, I ran the System File Checker and got this error. Log file is attached, I only cut out a snippet of the error part at the end of the log file.

At this point, I'm unsure what to do, or if it's even worth the effort to update to Windows 10. However, my Windows Update would remain broken.

EDIT: managed to get the full CBS.log pasted.

Please Unmark the Answer if you consider your problem to be unresolved.

As appropriate please download and run the System Update Readiness Tool – 32 bit (x86 version)

    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=3132

    or

Download and run the System Update Readiness Tool -64 bit version

    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=20858

The System Update Readiness Tool creates a log file that captures any issues that the tool found or fixed. The log file is located at the following location: •%SYSTEMROOT%\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log

    •%SYSTEMROOT%\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.persist.log

The system root is normally C.

Please upload a copy of these logs to your OneDrive as shared files and post a link here.
