Selecting default bluetooth connection type

I'm having a bit of trouble configuring my bluetooth headphones on Windows 7. I can pair them and connect them just fine, when I disconnect and reconnect them, for some reason, the default profile selected is "headset" over "Stereo audio device". When headset is selected the audio quality is dreadful, it can't be listened to and there is a green tick next to "Forward VoIP Calls to Handsfree". If I click "Disconnect" then "Listen to Music" the tick transfers next to "listen to music" with the "Connected to" showing as "Stereo Audio Device".

Is there a way to set the default connection to "Listen to Music" and "Stereo Audio Device"?

Thanks

Has anyone found a solution to this issue. I'm shocked at how the responders have failed to understand the OP's actual question, but just reply with generic how-to's that address troubleshooting issues.

Let me be clear: this thread is NOT about having connection problems. This thread is about changing the DEFAULT bluetooth connection type from "Forward VoIP Calls to Handsfree" to "Listen to Music" so that when you connect with your bluetooth headset, the connection automatically defaults to high-quality audio rather than low-bandwidth audio.

If anyone has some real insights into how this switch can be made, please post it here.

    thank you.

Seeing that it's been two years now and this seemingly still hasn't been resolved, this is what worked for me:

You have to Uncheck "Handsfree telephony" from the services setting on your bluetooth device -> Control Panel/Hardware and Sound/Devices and Printers -> select your device and right-click, open Properties, then go to Services tab and uncheck Handsfree Telephony.

thx lovecraft, that does eliminate a step. Now I just click on bluetooth/show bt devices/device/listen to music. Still wish my laptop would just connect auto like my phone does.
