I buy new Lenovo Thinkpad and install all windows updates and drivers and software for Canon MF453dw software. When I start scanning with the CANON MF SCAN UTILITY program, the following message appears: "Cannot communicate with the scanner. The cable may be disconnected, or the scanner may be turned off. Check the scanner status and try again. Scanner driver will be terminated**.**"
I reinstalled the drivers again, reset the printer, modem. I try to blocked all firewall, but problem is not solved.

I have installed on old Lenovo which I didn't windows update and still works on it.

    Dear David,

    Welcome to the Microsoft Community

The issue you are facing with the Canon MF Scan Utility on your new Lenovo ThinkPad where you can print but not scan is relatively common and can be due to several reasons ranging from driver conflicts to network settings.  Suggestion:Step 1: Reinstall and Update Canon DriversPress Win + X and select Device Manager. In Device Manager, expand Imaging devices or Printers.Right-click on your Canon MF453dw and select Uninstall device. If prompted, check Delete the driver software for this device and click Uninstall.Visit the Canon support website and download the latest drivers for the Canon MF453dw. Canon MF453dw Driver Download.

Install the drivers following the on-screen instructions.Step 2: Configure Windows Firewall and Security SoftwareGo to Control Panel > System and Security > Windows Defender Firewall.Click on Allow an app or feature through Windows Defender Firewall.Ensure that the Canon MF Scan Utility and other related Canon applications are allowed through the firewall for both public and private networks.Temporarily disable any third-party antivirus or firewall software to check if they’re causing interference.

    Step 3: Check Physical Connections:

    • Make sure the USB cable (if you're using USB) is securely connected to both the scanner and the computer.
    • If using a network connection (Wi-Fi or ethernet), ensure the scanner is properly connected to your network.

Step 4: Test Scan Function on a Different User AccountSometimes the issue could be related to the current user profile. Try creating a new user account on your Lenovo laptop, and see if the scanning functionality works there.

Press Win + I to open the Settings app.

Go to Accounts > Family & other users.

Under Other users, click on Add someone else to this PC.

Follow the prompts to create a new user.

Click on I don't have this person's sign-in information and then Add a user without a Microsoft account.

After creating the account, click on the new account under Other users.

Click Change account type and choose Administrator from the dropdown menu.

    Click OK.

By following these steps, you should be able to diagnose and resolve the issue of not being able to scan with the Canon MF Scan Utility on your Lenovo ThinkPad. If the problem persists, you may need to contact Canon support for more detailed assistance. Canon Desktop Inkjet Printers Forum

    Verified, it works.

1 - After upgrading from Windows 7, I was not using Widnows 8.1, but Windows 10. I think Canon uses the same driver for Windows 8.1 and Windows 10. I could not print and when using the scan function I got the same error message that the scanner is not active or is in use by another application. After spending several days and following so many tips, I could not get it to work. Here is what I finally did.

    1. Uninstall the Canon MF6530 driver and application. You can also use Device Manager to view all Canon Image and Printer devices and remove them from there as well.
    2. Disconnect the printer USB cable.
    3. Restart the PC
    4. Reinstall the MF6530 driver and application. Download from the Canon website and make sure you have the correct version
    5. THIS IS IMPORTANT because it worked for me as many tips did not include this. Go to Control Panel->System -> Advanced System Settings. This will open the "System Properties" window. Then click on the Environment Variables button at the bottom. Scroll down the bottom list and find "Path" and then click on Edit. Add this " ;C:\Windows\twain_32\MF6500 " to the value of the Path variable. Note that each value is separated by a semicolon.
    6. Restart your computer

If you are using ethernet, then you need to set a static IP address in your router.

I have the same problem on my new HP notebook.

On the old one notebook W11 23H2 is working properly with the latest canon drivers. The instalation on the new HP notebook W11 24H2 does not work MF SCAN UTILITY shows the same message: "Cannot communicate with the scanner. The cable may be disconnected, or the scanner may be turned off. Check the scanner status and try again. Scanner driver will be terminated**.**" (MF Network Scanner Selector 1.01, MF Scan Utility 1.21.0.2.)

I tried everything (reinstall drivers and scanner, switch off defender firewall, switch off defender antivirus) - nothing helped.

Probably issue in Win11 24H2 and Canon Scanner Driver.
