"Your Microsoft Support Verification Code"

I have received several emails with the above header, and a simple message saying "your verification code is : XXXXXX."

The sender is labelled as "Microsoft Support Verification" and comes from the mail address "maccount@microsoft.com"

Is someone trying to access my account, or is this simply a mail from a phishing address?

Thanks

Microsoft does indeed own this email address and it can be found on this page under Commercial for "Approval Emails": https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/power...

Like I said, this does not mean that the email you received is genuine as it can easily be spoofed in an email you receive to make it appear it has come from a legitimate source.

All i can say is, make sure you have your account locked down with Two-Step authentication. You can learn about this here: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/account-bil...

This makes it virtually impossible for anyone to get into your account from another untrusted device.

Yes, sometimes you will need to enter a verification code (not very often on a trusted device), which can feel a little annoying, but it's nowhere near the major headache you'll have if someone steals your account.

I hope this info proves useful for you.

    Kindest regards,

    Neil

Hi, my name is Neil, I'm an independent adviser and Outlook user like you.

Sorry you're receiving these unsolicited verification code emails.

If these are genuine, then someone is trying to login to your account, but is unable to pass the verification process.

From what you've wrote above, these do seem like legitimate verification emails, although I cannot be 100% sure.

Please see the information at the following link to keep your account secure: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/account-bil...

I hope this helps. Please let me know if you have any further questions.

    Kindest regards,

    Neil

That mail address is being automatically disguised / hidden on the platform I use to help you. It's a safety measure so that people cannot put their personal mail address down. So I cannot see the email address you are referring to. See the pic below to see what i mean.

Instead of writing the email address out. just give me the the bit before the AT symbol and the bit after the At symbol.

Also, even if it is an official address, these can easily be spoofed if the email is a scam. However, scam emails usually have a link in them to a page where they ask you to enter your email and password so that they can be stolen.
