How to fix error code 50126 when adding personal account to Outlook Windows application?

I cannot add a personal account (with personal domain) to local Outlook Windows application.

This is a Microsoft365 Family subscription and the domain is hosted at Godaddy.

When I use an outlook.com alias for the same account, Outlook says the account is added, but it's not.

Does Outlook think my personal account is a Work or School account? Error code 50126 seems ADFS related which I am not using.

I already deleted all Windows Account cached credentials related to this account in Credential Manager.

Has somebody seen this behaviour before and have a solution for this?

Note: I can login into all Microsoft web services.

Thanks in advance,

Stefan.

Hi, I'm Diane and will be happy to help you today.

Are you using the address for both a Microsoft account login and GoDaddy email (which is hosted in Microsoft 365 work) ?

Or did you add the domain to the Microsoft account as a personalized address?

If you have GoDaddy's email and also use it as a Microsoft account log in, you should remove it from the Microsoft account.

But if it is a personalized address in the Microsoft account, try making a new profile and add the account first.

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask.

    Hi Diane,

Creating a new Outlook profile and then adding my personalized account did not work.

You helped me out last week and I will give more information.

I have a personal domain "mydomain" since around 2011. This was then called Microsoft Live Domains. I used to have 2 different Microsoft accounts: firstname@mydomain and firstname.lastname@mydomain. Last week you helped me by providing a link to https://www.slipstick.com/outlookcom/outlook-com-custom-domains/ After changing my DNS records I was able to setup personalized domain by using my family admin account (myadmin@outlook).

Then I decided to use firstname@mydomain as personalized emailaddress in my firstname.lastname@mydomain account. This seems to work and now I have 2 personalized emaladdresses in one account.

I always have used Windows Mail on my personal computer, but decided to give Outlook a try and then detected I could not login with my firstname.lastname@mydomain account(s). Note I can add other non personal Microsoft accounts without problem. It was unclear for me wether this had something to do with personalized domain or not. Then I decided to migrate my domain to Godaddy. It's cheaper and had hope it might be the solution, which was not.

Hopefully this will clear my situation.

    Regards, Stefan.

Some progress here. I found out that I could claim my own domain by going to admin.microsoft.com. After claiming I could see that no licenses are available and/or provided, which is probably because those @mydomain accounts are considered as work accounts instead of personal accounts :-(

The personal accounts are member of the Microsoft365 plan, not the "work" accounts.

I think I need to somehow add my Microsoft Account as personal account instead of work account, but the Outlook wizard does not come with this option.

This indicates you used the address on the business side at some point- for many people, it was for a free teams account - it could also be for visual studio developer or Azure services. If you arent using it, try removing the domain from the business side. You should be warned if it is linked to a business service.

As for adding the account to outlook: File > Add Account - after entering the address, click Advanced options then check the box for manual setup before clicking connect. Choose Outlook.com on the next screen.

Yes, this was linked to an organization as a guest account and did remove it (before my previous post).

My family admin, say admin@outlook seems to be "owner" of the personalized mydomain, while firstname.lastname@mydomain seems to be owner of mydomain in "work" account context.

Adding Outlook.com account via Advanced Settings does not work. It gives error "Something went wrong and Outlook couldn't set up your account" as descriped here: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/something-went-wrong-and-outlook-couldn-t-set-up-your-account-b2d5e011-f801-489f-a908-e0318e172767 Changing registry (and restarting computer to be sure) did not help.

Maybe I will give premium support a try next week.
