What is happening here is, when the reading pane view is turned off and you single click the message, Outlook brings up the view of the message as full view instead of bringing the view to the right or bottom when you have it turned on.

What we want is the Reading Pane to be turned off and nothing to happen when you single click.

Also, here is the image from the instruction to turn of Mark as Read. There isn't Mark as Read here to uncheck. Even if there were you couldn't uncheck it because you would have to choose another option. Can you please give images on the fix for this and not just text. It would help solve this.

When you have Reading Pane hidden your message view does the below when you single click it. We do not want this behavior.

Agree with the others, I was trying to turn off one click open and finally did a search for it to find this thread. I was unhappy when I Could not move the app bar to the bottom of the page like I could before but this single click open is driving me nuts and Think I will go back to the old version.

I single click to highlight and improve the contrast so I can see the objects better, this trend to muted displays/fonts in the MS apps makes it harder for me to see things at a glance with my old man eyes.

I finally got mine fixed in the new version!!!

    1. File > Options > Advanced
    2. Under Outlook panes, select Reading Pane.
    3. Uncheck the box Mark item as read when the selection changes.
    4. Check the box Mark items as read when viewed in the Reading Pane.

Having the same issue, and not able to turn this option for a single-click. Posting reply to bump this back to the top.

Each rendition of the new outlook is getting better, but I'm kind of getting tired of having to revert back to the old version each time I hit a snag, that did exist in the older versions, but doesn't exist (intentionally removed?) in the new version.

I want to use the new version of Outlook however they need to add this option in as I don't like the fact the email opens in outlook when you click on it.

Hoping Microsoft put this feature back in as we are going to need this for people to adopt this new version.

Frustrating I can't get on with the new outlook as the copilot stuff looks good and doesn't work well with the old outlook.

Come on Microsoft put this feature back in please.
