Microsoft Excel Web Query Issue Reading Script

Hi,

I am having trouble running a web query from Google Finance. The first time I tried a web query with this page, everything worked fine. I tinkered with it a bit, and now every time I try to run the same web query I get the "Error Reading Script" message and am unable to do anything about it.

What should I do?

I'm using Microsoft Excel 2010, IE 10, and Windows 7.

What exactly is the URL for the web query?  What exactly is the web query after you "tinkered with it"?

I wonder if you got a message similar to the following, which I get when importing historical price data from finance.yahoo.com (mine is "access denied", not "reading error"):

The pop-up is a nuisance.  I don't know how to avoid it.

But in my case, I was able to simply clicked on No and proceed with import, with no undue consequences.

    Does that work for you?

No, that was not the case for me. However, after closing and re-opening Excel I fixed the problem. Hopefully this will be a long term fix and not a temporary one.

Now I have another question, if you don't mind. I'm trying to import another web query from yahoo finance, and the currency table, which is perfectly fine to be imported into Excel, does not have a yellow arrow for me to select it. In fact, most of the tables on yahoo finance don't have yellow arrows. Just the advertisements do. Why is that? Do you know how to fix this problem? Thanks for your help Joe!

Sorry, but I cannot help you.  I am not a Web Query aficionado.  I struggle with the feature myself.

For example, when I resize the WQ window, sometimes the yellow arrows no longer align with their original tables.  (I don't know if they still select their original tables.)

In fact, resizing the WQ window seems to have many defects.  Sometimes, perhaps due to random mouse clicks, the window snaps to the display width, and I cannot restore the original window without exiting and restarting Excel.  And when that happens, the WQ toolbar disappears.  So I cannot toggle the arrow selectors on and off.

Anyway, I can only confirm your observation for that particular URL.  I do not see arrow selectors for the currency tables.

Did you ever find a solution for this?  I am having the same issue.  Queries that I had performed for years have suddenly lost their "little yellow arrow".  (I've been using MarketWatch.com's data).

Interestingly, queries that were already set up, will still pull the data, even though when you go to edit it, there are no arrows there.  The table is highlighted without an arrow! And, of course, new queries can not be, since there is no arrow to 'select' the chart.

    Any insight would be appreciated!
