Creating multi-file documents?

I remember Word 2000 (yes, I am that old) had a facility for creating documents spread over several files.  I could use that facility at the moment (I am using MSW07) as I have a document that is becoming unwieldy in the monolithic state.  Trouble is, I can't remember what the process was called so I don't know what to search for.

What was it called?

Does it exist in MSW07?

If you happen to know off-hand, where can I find a tutorial on it?

Thanks

There was a bit left out there. On the Insert tab, in the Text group, click Object, then Text from File.

I do a few things to make managing these files easier.

I have 16 files worth of excel tips, 326MB total

I have 28 files worth of Word tips, 283MB total

So the first thing I've done is like you want, I've split my content into logical files, using logical (to me) file names ie:

I use a Standard naming approach:

    • W for Word
    • E for Excel
    • T for Tips
    • M for Menu
    • R for ribbon
    • descriptive file name (I used Menu and Ribbon tab names)

Inside the files I use Word Heading Styles, extensively.

I use shortcut keys to apply the heading styles

Colorful Heading Styles in Outline View

Colorful Heading Styles in Nave Pane and Web view

I (almost) always have the Navigation Pane / Document Map open

I use shortcut keys (and a macro) to switch between Web Layout view, Outline view and Print view

I do a lot of zooming in and out.

I have a 2 monitor setup, laptop built in monitor in Landscape orientation, and a second monitor in Portrait orientation. Editing Word documents in Portrait view is MUCH easier. It gives you a lot more perspective on the content.

    EDIT:

It's implied in my naming convention, but at times I will use letters and numbers as a prefix to force a desired sort order, ie

    • ....
    • ET 09 ...
    • ET 10 ...
    • ET 99 ...
    • ...
    • WT 00 ...
    • WT 01a ...
    • WT 01b...
    • WT 02 ...
    • ...

It's only a bit over 3MB at the moment but it will be getting considerably bigger.  The problem is that it contains a LOT of illustrations so many pages and navigation is getting more complex.  I figure to break it down into smaller and more mentally manageable sections.
