get error "Fields nested too deeply"

I have a long document that uses a few DOCVARIABLES in headers/footers, some cross-references, a TOC, and Caption & Table numbering. Otherwise, not much in the way of fields. When I went to update all fields, I got  "Fields nested too deeply". What is this, and how can I be sure my fields are properly updating?

A quick Internet search took me to this MS article https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/220250. It talks about mail merge and INCLUDETEXT scenarios, which I don't have (as far as I know).

Any ideas out there that can help me with this?

If you can not share the document, then all I can suggest is that you copy everything EXCEPT the final paragraph mark and paste it iñto à new document and if that does not overcome the problem, try copying and pasting first, one half of the document and then the other, to identify the location of the problem, and then repeat the process with smaller and smaller parts to isolate the problem.

Gosh..that is awfully generous of you...but contents are proprietary, and I'd get in BIG trouble if I shared. Oddly, this just started happening today - I've been cruising along with this document for over a week. Does the "sudden onset" help give you any ideas on what/where I should look???

If you send me a copy of the document, I will investigate the problem

Here's a discussion of this issue: Fields Nested Too Deeply I'd start by examining the DOCVARIABLE fields to see if there are other fields inside them.
