Insert Comment option is missing from right-click menu

I am using Excel 2016 on Windows 10. Today, the "Insert comment" option disappeared from the right-click pop-up context menu. When I right-click on a cell with no comment, there is no option to add one. If I right-click on a cell with a comment, I can edit or delete the comment. On the Insert tab of the ribbon, the Comments section is grayed out. This problem is affecting all spreadsheets that I have tried.

I googled the problem and tried every solution offered but none of them worked. How can I add comments to cells again?

Thank you

there is no such option on my right-click menu, not on the ribbon, nor in the ribbon settings (commands' list)

Yeah, I don't think the previous reply is actually correct.  The notes thing is available in updates I believe but it wasn't a direct replacement.  Only advise I can give is the Shift+F2 and hope it puts itself right one day.

I too am unable to insert any comments today, I am able to see, edit and delete comments previously entered.  Hopefully I will be able to insert comments once again as others have done

    Shift + f2 works

Would like to know how to add the feature back (upon R click) - seems like a lot of people are having problems with the Insert Comment disappearing (was working fine for me the other day).

Home tab, click "Tell me what you want to do" type insert comment. Be sure you are in the cell where u want the comment.

    Worked for me!

the insert comment option has disappeared from my right click context menu too.  Running Excel Office 365.   If I use one of the work arounds suggested above to insert a comment, the option then appears to edit or delete the comment.

But if the cell has no comment in it, I have to use 3 or 4 steps to insert it as opposed to one previously.... hoping this is a temporary bug because it stupid.
