Insert Comment option is missing from right-click menu

I am using Excel 2016 on Windows 10. Today, the "Insert comment" option disappeared from the right-click pop-up context menu. When I right-click on a cell with no comment, there is no option to add one. If I right-click on a cell with a comment, I can edit or delete the comment. On the Insert tab of the ribbon, the Comments section is grayed out. This problem is affecting all spreadsheets that I have tried.

I googled the problem and tried every solution offered but none of them worked. How can I add comments to cells again?

Thank you

the insert comment option has disappeared from my right click context menu too.  Running Excel Office 365.   If I use one of the work arounds suggested above to insert a comment, the option then appears to edit or delete the comment.

But if the cell has no comment in it, I have to use 3 or 4 steps to insert it as opposed to one previously.... hoping this is a temporary bug because it stupid.

This thread started almost a year ago, so I guess it depends on your definition of temporary.  To be fair, how long do those 3 or 4 steps actually take? Bigger picture, worse things happening around the world and all that.

I posted a few days ago that the Insert Comment feature/option while R click in Excel on a cell disappeared, it's active again today and no need for the workaround(s) anymore.

Only change between my post a few days ago (with the problem) and today (without the problem) is that I had Shut Down my computer at one point, although I'm not exactly sure when the Insert Comment upon R click re activated.

    Hi Darleen,

I have exactly the same problem today. My Microsoft excel version is Microsoft excel 2019 MSO. When i right click my mouse i cannot find the insert comment option. I tried rebooting my computer and after the reboot i could not find insert comment option too when i right click mouse. My Shift+F2 function also not functioning. What do i need to do get the insert comment?

Good morning, I am wondering if you've tried shutting down and restarting the computer? I had the same problem (although Shift +F2 worked as a substitute). I think that the comments re appeared on the R click drop down menu only after I shut down and restated everything.

Can you click the Review tab and then under the Comments group click the New Comment bubble as an alternative? Can also try All Commands under File tab > Options > Customize Ribbon > select All Commands and then scroll down to Comments (use the right arrow to add it to the R box)?

    Hope this works!
