Authentication Error for non-browser sign in Power Query via Web

Hi all,

I'm trying to connect to an Excel workbook within my SharePoint Online library, which I can access via my normal credentials and can sign on to my account via non-browser when I go to File -> Account.

However, the system asks for my credentials again when I am in Excel and click on Data -> Get Data -> From Web and put in the URL address of the file and click on "Organisational Account".

It then freezes the authentication window without the ability to reenter the details.

Above is the initial sign-in page. Note that the account is already signed in the top right corner in the same tenancy. However, this screen suggests that I'm not signed in and when I click on Sign In to do so, I get the below screen.

The above is the hung up authentication screen when I click on "Sign In"

I have:

  1. Restarted the app.
  2. Checked credentials in that they can log in to the environment.
  3. That I have file permission.
  4. Done a repair install.
  5. Removed all Microsoft Office Authentication settings within the Registry.
  6. Tried to log in through my phone's hotspot in case it was a firewall issue (it's not).

I still have the same issue.

    Hi Dihao,

Safe Mode has allowed the Authentication Window to now appear as per normal, now I'm having an odd authentication issue. I have given myself direct full control access on SharePoint to see if that would fix this issue and it hasn't.

As with Matty's experience, the Office repair tool did not address the issue for me.

However, running Excel in Safe mode allowed for the authentication popup window to function properly.

Is there a good way for me to track down the add-in that is potentially causing the authentication to freeze when not in Safe mode?

To add more to this, I did a complete Office Reinstall after the Online Repair Tool didn't work. Still ended up being an issue.

And I second Robert's point about utilising the information that we get from Safe Mode to get to a solution. I'll keep you both updated on the windows clean boot scenario.

    Hi Matty and Robert,

Thank you for the updates and sharing the test results. If you can see the log in dialog when you enter Office Safe mode, which means the problem should be caused within Excel application, such as add-ins.

To figure out whether it is truly related by add ins in Excel application, you can go to File> Options> Add-ins> Go to uncheck all the active add-ins in Excel application with Safe Mode

Then launch the Excel in normal mode. And see whether the log in window can be displayed correctly

If the log in window can be displayed correctly in Excel normal mode. Active the Office add-ins one by one and see which add-ins is actually caused this problem.

@Matty, For the authenticate error you get, we may discuss this after we resolve the issue with log in window. Otherwise it might be quit confuse for massive information. Thanks for your understanding. :)

    Best regards,

    Dihao

After setting all Add-Ins to Inactive, the window still freezes. So far the only way to access the login window through Excel is to load in Safe Mode.
