Print server and Print Nightmare update

Hi All,

I'm having issues with some Print Servers after running Windows Updates and installed

2021-08 Cumulative Update for Windows Server 2019 for x64-based Systems (KB5005030)

After the update installation I'm getting the error "Connect to printer Windows cannot connect to the printer. Operation failed with error 0x0000011b" and the printer fails to install.

Is there any workaround to keep Print Severs up and running?

I cannot permanently remove the August update, because the Print Nightmare update will come again in Sept Cummulative Update.

I also tried to revert the configurations using:
* “Allow Print Spooler to accept client connections” policy
* HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows NT\Printers\PointAndPrint.

Nothing worked. I will appreciate any advice.

Thanks,

Manuel

    We run into this issue on Computers with Windows 10 Version 1909 installed.
    Upgrading Windows to the 20H2 or higher solves the Problem.

    Hi guy's,

    Our print server is a server 2012 R2 and we use follow my printer of Konica. Since the update KB5005613 was install our users cannot send print job to the printer and when we tried to add the printer again we got the error the PC cannot communicate with print server, error 283.
    On the print server we did enabled the policy that you guy's mentioned here, and set it to Show warning and Elevated Prompt and could see that registry keys were created on the print server, but still we have the same issue. The only solution was removing the update KB5005613 from the print server

    Does anyone else have the same experience with this update and server 2012 R2? how can we get this to work with this update?

    Thanks

    Hello
    I am also having issues printing from a GPO-installed printer. The print jobs show up for just a brief time then disappear from the queue. This is on older systems with the printer already installed. On new systems, I am unable to add the printer from the printer install list. I get error 283. The brand of the printer doesn't seem to matter. I don't have any of the updates listed here installed. I have uninstalled one of the latest updates KB5005573. That seems to have fixed my issue.

    Hi,

    I also would like to share the solution I used to solve this matter to our clients. Hope it can be of help to someone.

    In my opinion this update is importart but unfortunately it makes network printers to stop working.

    It's viable for printers that are network shared and there isn't any kind of domain controller or where the "Group Policy" or "Regedit" approach didn't work.

    Short story:

    add a server "windows credential" to the client "credential manager".

    -I'm calling server the pc that is sharing printers. This server doesn't need to be "Windows Server"...;
    -It doesn't need to be an "administrator" user, in fact and in my opinion, it shouldn't be;
    -There is no need for a reboot. If all went well, the "ports" in the printer will start to show like before the patch (sometimes after 1 or 2 mins). It's a good indicator that it is solved;
    -If it still doesn't work try restarting the "Print Spooler" service on the client and wait again;

    -Last resort, delete the printer on the client and reinstall like normally: "\serverip" and select "connect" on the printer you want. It will open a dialog asking for permission instead of the error.

    A command to automate the credential part (create a file like "example.bat" and change what is inside the <> and also remove them):

    cmdkey /add:<server_ip> /user:<server_user_not_administrator> /pass:<guess_!>

    This only needs to be run on the client.

    Best of luck.

    Kind regards,
    TC
