Is it possible to do this using the Excel Pivot table function?
Sure, open my sample file, move the group field into the Columns section.

how can I get a field as a row label instead of it being a summary for excel pivot.
the help says that I need to place the field in the row label area where the pivot is defined. It does not do that.
I have created the table for the pivot from range links to another sheet, because the original sheet is not data structured to suit the pivot labels.
