“Battery Limit” removed from UEFI, but now only charges up to 50%

“Battery Limit” mode has been removed from the UEFI on my Surface Pro (11th edition) and it still only charges up to 50 %. It seems last week there was an update (firmware update?) and the system still seems to be enforcing the 50 % limit automatically based on firmware behavior—even without a visible toggle.

I downloaded the firmeware, but this did not help: Download Surface Pro 11th Edition Drivers and Firmware from Official Microsoft Download Center

Can anyone help?

I tried the SEMM way but I didn't manage to remove the limit.
I have enrolled my laptop to SEMM and apply msi patched, but nothing changed.
Also I tried to reset with surface factory image with an usb drive with no results expect loosing all my data.

I have the same problem: Battery Limit mode has been removed from the UEFI, but with the Surface Laptop (7th edition). Microsoft's online support was unable to resolve the issue. The recommendation to reset the laptop did not solve the problem. I was asked to return the laptop to the service station, which I did on August 14th.. I am still waiting for a response. I will keep you informed.

I've got back my Surface Laptop 7 from Microsoft service today. I've checked the UEFI-Setting and the "Battery Limit" was available again. There was no information from Microsoft service what they have done.

UEFI status:

Battery limit issue: Firmware SAM Controller 25.203.139; Bootchain 175.126.235;

After repair: Firmware SAM Controller 25.2.139; Bootchain 169.105.235

Please note that after installation and system updates the firmware was like before (Controller 25.203.139; Bootchain 175.126.235), with the consequence that the Battery limit entry in the UEFI was gone again!

Difference now is, that before the installation the Battery limit was switched off. The Surface can be charge now up to 100%.

Finally it shows that Microsoft has not fixed the bug in the firmware.

Just checking my understanding of the sequence of events.

You sent the Surface in for repair

It was returned (with different SAM and Bootchain versions from when you sent it)

Did you note the UEFI battery charging toggle at this point?

Updates and firmware were applied (updated SAM and Bootchain versions match those when you sent it in for repair)

The UEFI battery charging toggle was gone again

At the end, it can charge to 100%

At the end, does the Surface App "Battery & charging" tab have effect on the charging limit now? Are the options for "Limit to 80%", "Charge to 100%" working as expected?

Feedback to Q from Greg: Your understanding is correct. I confirm that the charging toggle was available with the updated (old) firmware.
The options for "Limit to 80%", "Charge to 100%" are working as expected.

Feedback to Barb: Serial number of the Surface remains the same.
Hence it looks like that the old firmware can fix the problem by disableing the Battery Limit in the UEFI Setting.

I got the same problem :( After installing the latest Windows 11 and firmware update (August 7, 2025), my Surface Laptop 7 (Snapdragon X Elite) battery no longer charges above 50%.

Previously, there was a “Battery Limit Mode” option in Surface UEFI, but it has disappeared after the firmware update. In the Surface App, I can only see Smart Charging options, but the device remains stuck at 50% charge even when I disable Battery Limit / Smart Charging and choose “Always charge to 100%”.

This issue has hit a lot of Surface Laptop 7 and Surface Pro 11 users since the August 7, 2025 firmware update.

Here's a full rundown of what we've learned so far:

The Battery Limit Mode toggle in UEFI has been removed after the firmware update. The system is enforcing a 50% cap based on previous settings, even if the Surface App UI suggests it’s disabled

Even with Smart Charging disabled and “Always charge to 100%” selected in the Surface App, the battery remains stuck at 50%.

This behavior is consistent across the Surface Laptop 7 (Snapdragon X Elite) and Surface Pro 11.

So far, no one has found a reliable way to restore normal battery behaviour; not through hotfixes, rollbacks, or firmware tweaks. Microsoft has officially acknowledged the issue, both via direct email and in this thread, which is positive and encouraging. However, they’ve offered no timeline for a fix.

I recommend continuing to file reports through the Feedback Hub and reaching out to Microsoft Support directly. I’m currently exploring the possibility of getting a replacement unit under warranty, since this update has effectively crippled a core feature of the device.

Keep the pressure on! This debacle deserves serious attention. If I’m being realistic, I don’t expect a fix before the September Patch Tuesday at the earliest… but I’d love to be proven wrong.

@Aria, I must have gone to the wrong download page. On the Manual Update page there is a new firmware file dated 8/26/2025. I downloaded it, installed, restarted, ...Booting to UEFI, no battery charging option toggle.

I set the Surface App > Battery & Charing to Charge to 100%

I'm charging now, presently at 38%. Will let you know if it gets above 50%.

I updated firmware. The filename was SurfacePro11_ARM_Win11_26100_25.081.7185.0.msi

The UEFI did not have the Battery charging toggle.

I updated the Surface App as well since it indicated there was a newer version.

My surface Pro reached 50%, and it has been there for at least 15 minutes with no change.

I tried the Surface App > Battery & charging set to "Charge to 100%" and "Limit to 80%". Neither setting got the battery above 50%.

@Aria and @Gregg, it's my Surface Laptop 7 that is stuck, so I can't check Gregg's results. However, I wonder if this really is new firmware for the Surface Pro 11. The version number, 1.0, didn't change. The new date on the download page may just reflect when the page was in some way updated. We are all very anxious for this to get resolved. I ask for updates through the case I had opened when this first started, but I don't get any response. It would certainly help set our expectations if a timeline was shared.

Everyone, yesterdays update only contains this in the notes:

"Performance and usability:
Improves wake-up speed by optimizing power management to delay the system’s transition into hibernate mode."

So it doesnt contain a fix to this problem. We will wait for the update that Jeremy mentioned to pass QA and get released.

Basically - MS have removed our devices mobile capabilities for a whole month now without official acknowledgement, communication or a fix.

I’ve just installed the “Microsoft Corporation – System Hardware Update – 6/26/2025” via Windows Update, and unfortunately, it has made no difference. My device remains capped at 50% battery capacity, and we’re now approaching the one-month mark without a fix. At the very least, we deserve a clear ETA for resolution.

I’ve contacted Microsoft support to request a replacement unit, as my device is still under warranty. However, communication has been inconsistent and unclear.

This debacle is becoming embarrassing for Microsoft. A firmware-level flaw that cripples core functionality on flagship devices to this degree.

So, let me get this straight.. You've all set your battery limit to 50% in BIOS? (I did this too, so I'm currently facing the same issue here).

Now we've discovered the option to set a limit to 80% via the surface app, which is way better than the 50% limit. Finally.

But suddenly, the 50% limit we've all used for months is "unusable", "no mobile capabilities", should be replaced under warranty.. What is this?

I too want the 80% limit, but that extra month without it won't make or break it for me. I'm used to the 50% limit, which still gives me an easy 4/5 hours of work when working on battery.

I'm usually at my desk in my office, plugged in. In that case 50% is just fine. Week before last, and coming up next week, I am in a meeting room for 3 days straight all day. Having 4-5 hours with a 50% charge does not get through the day. I'm sure everyone's situation is different. There are probably people who need the higher charge more regularly than I do. It's the difference between successfully getting work done through the day and not doing so. Especially when someone in the room says "I'm sending it to you", and all I can do is shrug. Not a good look.

This seems to affect people who set the 50% limit in the UEFI / BIOS before the update to the firmware was made in early August. When the firmware changed, the option to change charge level disappeared from the UEFI. In the Surface App, selecting the 80% or 100% charge does not enable the device to charge beyond 50%. Somehow a setting got in place deep inside that is not paying attention to the Surface App selection.

Jan, the reason we set the battery limit to on is for when we're docking the Surface at a desk and don't want the battery degrading as a result of it being plugged in all the time. But if we never meant for a machine to go anywhere away from our desk we wouldn't have bought an ultra portable Surface Pro or laptop to begin with, now would we? Considering you so infrequently need to go mobile for lengths of time that require the full battery, it should be you answering questions about why you would buy such a product that's evidently overkill for your needs, rather than us having to answer why we'd want to use it for what it's designed for from time to time.

I understand everyone's frustration, and I feel the same. But, to me anyway I can wait for the 'fix' as whenever I am away from a charge point I always carry a USB C 20v power bank with me anyway which will charge my surface 7 at least twice. Surely these days most of us have a power bank?

I don’t mean to offend any of you… but you’re being naive. There won’t be a fix. For users affected by the Surface Pro 11 (ARM) and Surface Laptop 7 (ARM), this is a serious issue. I myself can no longer properly use my Surface Laptop X-Elite on the go — and I only bought it two months ago. But if MSFT had given even a fraction of the attention to this battery charging issue that we’ve given it, they would have acted long ago. In other words… if they had truly wanted to, MSFT would have rolled out a fix by now. They simply don’t want to. The number of users affected by this is just not relevant to them. They’ve already written off our disappointment and frustration. I’ve decided to return my device to the retailer. I don’t want to still be annoyed by this issue come Christmas.

BIOS successfully flashed with "System Hardware Update - 9/3/2025".

Battery is now charging over 50%

But...

Surface app is now crashing (few second after launch), so I'm not able to choose "80%" or "100%" or "adaptive". I'm stuck consequently with "80%" option (which I set some days ago), at least 80% is way better than 50%.

Hope this issue would be easier for MS to solve.

It has just appeared to me in usual WinUpdate as "System Hardware Update - 9/3/2025"

Everyone,

Microsoft usually tests firmware updates in the Insiders channels before rolling out the production. It looks like a few people who have their impacted devices enrolled in an Insider's channel have started receiving a firmware fix that is working. Microsoft has never announced firmware updates in Insiders nor have they documented them. There is no info on how long this fix will be tested in Insiders. Firmware updates in production are often rolled out separately from Windows Cumulative Updates. So hopefully, it won't be long before a fix is available in production.

Please be aware everyone, that when you join the Insiders Programme, you may void your warranty or at the very least render it invalid for any trouble pertaining to any updates you installed while on it. I'm very tempted to join it just to download this update, but it's not worth it as far as I'm concerned. In fact, this whole affair has proved just why the warranty is so necessary.

@ Barb. The documentation you are prompted to read during the sign up process says otherwise. Section 11 of the Windows Insider Program Agreement states: "Warranty. Microsoft, and our affiliates, resellers, distributors, vendors, and partners, make no warranties, express or implied, guarantees or conditions with respect to the Program Services or your participation in the Program. You understand that use of the Program is at your own risk and that we provide the Program on an "as is" basis "with all faults" and "as available." You bear the entire risk of using the Program. To the extent permitted under your local law, we exclude any implied warranties, including for merchantability, satisfactory quality, fitness for a particular purpose, workmanlike effort, and non-infringement. You may have certain rights under your local law. Nothing in this Agreement is intended to affect those rights, if they apply." While it doesn't SOUND like it completely voids the warranty (I did use the word "may") for all time and under any future circumstances, it does seem to state that if the update does anything negative (take bricking your machine for instance), you are liable which is the bit I mentioned after "at least". Please get your facts straight before you tell someone they're wrong, and especially about a thing which may cause others to behave in a risky way.

@CJM from my own personal experience - I had a Surface Pro 5 in the Insider's program (granted a few years back). After it rebooted from an Insiders update, the SSD had gone south. I don't know what was the cause but it sure seemed too coincidental.. Anyway, Microsoft replaced it under warranty. There was no discussion of what caused it to brick the SSD. And I am not encouraging anyone to put a computer in the Insider's program. That said, I will ask around and see if I can get a quotable statement from Microsoft.

Because while I do not doubt your personal experience, an anecdotal precedent will be little protection against the stated policy in a written agreement if Microsoft decides to enforce it this time. Also, I think this stuff mostly concerns software problems (of which this UEFI issue could be considered one). I doubt hardware failures are going to be affected by the program.

Ok seen as I had nothing better to do. I enrolled in the Beta version and then chose to un-enroll when next update comes out. Battery charging back to normal. Note: After the update you need to reboot into UEFI and turn the toggle back off.

I’ve joined the Release Preview channel, which allowed me to install the Microsoft Corporation - System Hardware Update - 9/3/2025.

The update successfully restored the Battery Limit toggle in the UEFI, exactly as it was before. My device is currently charging above 50%.

Do we have any guidance on how to use the Battery Limit toggle in the UEFI now? I’d still prefer to enable it when my machine is plugged in for extended periods, but I’m petrified to trigger the issue again.

In Germany there is no fix available up to now! It is very, very dissapointing because there was a finger cross announcment by the staff of Microsoft! Since one month ago no usage of the Surface on to go.

That is very disappointing. I didn't think we would get the update this quickly, so I went ahead and joined the Windows Insider program and the update was available straight away. I then unrolled from the Insider program after updating.

They released the new Windows ARM update KB5065426, but the problem still remains. Really disappointed.

The Battery Limit toggle has returned to the UEFI, exactly as it was before.

The Surface App toggles (80%, 100%, Adaptive) are now functioning as intended.

To get this update, you’ll need to join the Windows Insider Program via your settings and select the Release Preview channel. Once enrolled, the update should appear through Windows Update.

Yes, it works - I did the same yesterday - I installed the Windows Insider Program - Release Preview and the toggle is finally back. I now can control the battery level via the Surface App.

It took too long, but finally a better solution than having to go to the BIOS settings.

This is a bit off-topic, but I’m curious about everyone’s screen-on battery life. From my experience, when I use it for office tasks (browsing, Office apps, chatting, etc.), the battery lasts around 5–6 hours, which is not the same as what was advertised or mentioned by reviewers.
How about you?
My laptop is surface laptop 7 with Snapdragon X elite 13.8 inch

@ Phúc Lộc I'd say I get about 8 hours doing the same. I have a different machine though. I have the Surface Pro 11 5G with X Elite 12 core. Also, I tend to have the power settings on recommended, even when on mains as I don't trust the amount of heat being generated when it's on Best. - the machine gets quite hot to the touch. The 8h can turn into 3-4h if I'm doing anything graphical though, and using the slim pen 2 tends to sap it quite a bit too because it increases power to the processor to reduce latency, I think. This may also be because when I'm doing something graphical, I have the screen brightness up quite high.

Hi Phuc,

I have the Surface Laptop 7, 15-inch model with the Snapdragon X Elite processor, which has better battery life than the 13-inch variant. Based on my loose observation when I first got the device, I noticed battery drain of around 10-12% per hour during light office use. This includes browsing, working in Office apps, and messaging.

This is without battery saver mode enabled, the power settings on recommended, and brightness set to around 60%. Of course, battery performance takes a significant hit when enabling HDR and running more demanding applications.

Honestly, I haven’t paid attention to battery metrics lately, but I’m happy to do more testing and share feedback here or on other platforms like Discord if that’s helpful!

Thanks everyone for all the guidance. I have a Pro 11, Snapdragon 10 core. It took me several hours to get this done but finally got it. So, I am going to add some details which will be remedial for most of you but might help other non-experts like me avoid a lot of frustration.

Turn off your VPN because you will want the additional bandwidth.

Before you start, go into Settings > Privacy & Security > Diagnostic & Feedback > Send Optional Diagnostic Data and toggle ON. If it is set to OFF, you will get an error message, and it will stop there. You have to Restart for this to take effect.

When you go into Windows Update to enroll in the Insiders Program, make sure the "Get the latest update..." is toggled OFF beforehand. I forgot to do this and ended up with all the other Windows prerelease updates which required several restarts.

Once you finally go into the Insiders Program it requires you to log in again even if you are logged into your MS account. Then click on "Get Stared" it will walk you through the two User Agreements. This is where I ran into trouble. First, I got the error message for 2. above. Then it just kept cycling on Step 1. I use DuckDuckGo as my default browser, so I changed the default browser to Edge and used Edge. I don't know if this was the problem but after changing, it allowed me to get past Step 1.

Note on Step 1: on my computer it took a long time to respond so wait it out. This is what may have caused my problems in 4. above, who knows.

Then you can go into the options where you choose Release Preview and finish the setup. Before you restart, confirm 3. above or you will get everything on restart.

I don't know about other models, but on mine I had to shut down again and restart into UEFI to turn OFF the replaced Battery Limit toggle then restart to Windows. That finally did the trick.

Finally go back into Settings > Update > Insiders Program > Stop Getting Previews Build and toggle ON "Unenroll this devise when next update of Windows is released". After that the window will show "Queued for unenrollment".

Then go back and reset all the changes you made.

I know this is a lot, but hopefully it reduces someone else's effort getting this done.

thanks for your feedback. It reassures me that other users are also waiting for the regular update... we've been annoyed by this bug for so long now... a couple more weeks of waiting doesn’t really make a difference anymore... and your point about the disclaimer is definitely valid.

@Alstershipper, I am waiting. I purchased a powerbank for my meeting over the last week. I have not seen indication of exactly when a fix will be ready. Since a fix is in the insider program, and one person in this list reported an issue with the surface app occurring after installing the insider program fix, I am speculating there are details being worked out. Until then, the powerbank can get me through.

Today I got a System Hardware Update 9/3/2025. After installation the "Battery Limit" is in UEFI and is possible to turn off. Charging over 50% works now.

Surface Pro 11th, Snapdragon X-10.

Good morning, everyone!

I observed a strange thing. Yesterday evening, I charged my Surface Pro 11 to 80%, then turned it off completely. This morning, the battery was at 75%. How is that possible when the computer was switched off? It should stay at 80%, correct?

Has anyone else experienced this?

Yesterday, I received a Surface app update on my Surface Pro 12in, and now the battery and charging option in the app has disappeared.... at least this time I set the battery level to 80% but again can't change to 100% :-).

My SL7 is queued for unenrollment from the Release Preview Channel but now 25h2 is officially released (I have the upgrade on my other PC's) why is my SL7 still enrolled? How long does it normally take to get 'unenrolled'?
