How to Stop My Screen from Automatically Dimming?

My screen dims every few minutes regardless of whether I am using it or even with energy saver turned off. I have an ASUS Zenbook and use Windows 11.

Steps Already Taken: Checked for display driver updates, turned off the automatic dimness when power gets to a certain point, made sure no adaptive brightness is on

To stop your screen from automatically dimming on your ASUS Zenbook running Windows 11, you can try the following steps:

    1. Check Power Settings: Go to Settings > System > Power & battery. Ensure that the settings for screen brightness are configured correctly. You may want to adjust the display timeout settings or ensure that the screen brightness is set to your desired level.
    2. Disable Adaptive Brightness: Since you mentioned you've already checked for adaptive brightness, ensure that it's completely turned off. You can find this setting under Settings > System > Display, and look for any options related to adaptive brightness.
    3. Update Graphics Drivers: Even though you've checked for display driver updates, ensure that you have the latest drivers installed from the manufacturer's website, as sometimes Windows Update may not provide the latest versions.
    4. Check for Third-Party Software: Sometimes, third-party applications can control display settings. Make sure there are no applications running that might be adjusting your screen brightness automatically.
    5. Windows Mobility Center: You can also check the Windows Mobility Center (accessible by pressing Windows + X and selecting it) to see if there are any brightness settings that might be affecting your display.
    6. Registry Settings: If you're comfortable with it, you could check the registry settings for brightness control. However, proceed with caution as incorrect changes can affect system stability.

If the problem persists after trying these steps, it may be worth checking the ASUS support forums or contacting their customer support for further assistance.

    Dear @Jennifer R,

Thank you for posting your question in the Microsoft Q&A forum.

We apologize for any inconvenience you may encounter when using our services/ products. Based on your description, kindly try these following steps:

Turn off ASUS “OLED Care” / Screen Protection auto‑dimming (Zenbook OLED)

Many Zenbooks ship with ASUS OLED Care which intentionally dims the screen every few minutes when it detects static content to reduce burn‑in.

    • Open MyASUS (or Armoury Crate on some models)
      • Go to Customer Support > ASUS OLED Care (or Customization > ASUS OLED Care / Screen Protection).
      • Disable options like:
        • Dim screen when displaying static content
        • Pixel Shift / Screen Saver auto‑dimming (leave pixel‑shift on if you want, but turn off auto‑dim).
    • If you do not see “OLED Care” in MyASUS, check MyASUS > Customization > Splendid and disable any “Eye Care” or dynamic brightness features that alter luminance automatically.

Disable Windows 11 “Content adaptive brightness” (CABC)

Windows 11 has two places for CABC (it can re‑enable after updates):

    • Settings > System > Display > Brightness
      • Uncheck “Automatically adjust brightness based on content”.
    • Settings > System > Power & battery > Power (or Battery)
      • Make sure there’s no “reduce brightness” or “optimize brightness” toggle hiding here.
    • If you use HDR, open Settings > System > Display > HDR and turn off any “Auto brightness” or “Optimize for battery” options that affect HDR luminance.

Turn off Windows 11 Presence/Attention‑based dimming

Some ASUS models include an IR/ambient sensor that Windows uses to “dim when you’re not looking.”

    • Settings > Privacy & security > Presence sensing
      • Turn off options like “Lower my screen brightness when I’m not looking” or “Dim screen when I step away.”

    Quick resets

    • Power plan reset
      • Settings > System > Power & battery > Power mode: set to Balanced.
      • Open Control Panel > Power Options > Change plan settings > Change advanced power settings > under Display, ensure Enable adaptive brightness is Off for On battery and Plugged in.
    • Clean driver install
      • Install the ASUS‑provided graphics driver (and chipset/ME firmware) for your exact Zenbook model from ASUS Support, even if newer ones are on Intel/AMD’s site, OEM packages sometimes carry the right toggles.
