Unable to join a Team by invite code

Question

Hello,

With the newest Teams update we've been unable to join a Team with a code. Whenever I successfully make an invite code for a Team the joining person gets a general error "Unable to join the team. Make sure your code is correct". We've tried this on newest desktop app and browser version, and also tried to make a clean new team to test it out to no avail. Is there a known issue with joining a Team by a code or am I perhaps doing something wrong?

NEW UPDATE: Users May Be Unable to Join Teams via Join Code

I’ve checked the Microsoft 365 Service Health dashboard and confirmed that this issue is currently an active incident.

• Incident ID: TM1186997
• Workaround: Send a direct link to join the team instead of using a join code. Status: Service degradation. Microsoft is testing a fix and will revert the change once validated.
• Next update: November 18, 2025, at 1:30 AM GMT+7.

I will check and provide another update as soon as new information becomes available.

After reviewing the details you provided, I tested this scenario in my own environment. I created both a public and a private team to verify, and as you mentioned, the invited user encountered the same error.  

I also tried resetting and sending a new code, but the issue persisted (both desktop and Web).

Currently, when I check the Service Health dashboard, there is no incident reported for this functionality.  

However, I strongly recommend that you report this issue directly through the Teams app so that the development team can be aware of it.

Additionally, if this account is provided by your school, I recommend you contact your IT administrator to ask them to raise a support ticket to higher-level technical support so that they can investigate further.  

To create a Support ticket, they can go to: Microsoft 365 admin center

• On right bottom corner click on "Help & support"                

 

 

When the ticket is opened, a support engineer can start a remote session to investigate the issue, review the back-end settings, and optionally run a sync tool to resolve the issue.

I understand that in an education environment, joining by code is very convenient and this impacts your workflow. Since the same issue occurs in my environment as well, I believe that if more users report it, the engineering team will be able to prioritize and fix it sooner.

NEW UPDATE: November 19

I would like to inform the latest update regarding the issue where some users may be unable to join Microsoft Teams using a join code: 

Current Status: The fix has been successfully deployed to most of the affected environment. The final stage of deployment, impacting a small subset of users in the Eastern United States region, is expected to complete by our next scheduled update. 

Next Update: Thursday, November 20, 2025, at 5:00 AM GMT+7.
