Creating a Classnotebook from existing notebook

We no longer seem to be able to create a class notebook from an exiting notebook. - We are an education tenant.

Every time we try all we get is something went wrong please retry.

We have tried it in the teams app and in the cloud and neither work.

We are using the latest version of teams and Onenote / class notebook.

We can't actually create class notebooks from the onenote app anymore - that option seems to have gone. We are using the latest OneNote.

Any ideas whether a setting has changed somewhere that we don't know about.
whether this is tied up in general goings on with sharepoint and outlook incidents or something else.

Any ideas how we make this happen please.

Thank you.

    Hello @Heather Peake ,

Thank you for your additional information.

I’ve checked all available incident sources and confirmed that the current issue is not related to any ongoing service health advisories, including the SharePoint incident you've seen in the admin center. As the OneNote Class Notebook in Microsoft Teams is not a SharePoint web part and it’s also not a custom app you build yourself.

At this point, I recommend contacting Microsoft Technical Support for backend troubleshooting. A technical support engineer can perform a remote session to investigate the situation verify the backend configurations and run any necessary synchronization tools to resolve the problem. If the issue requires further attention, they can escalate it to a specialized team for deeper analysis.

You can find the steps to contact the support team in my initial answer.

Please let me know if you need any further assistance with this process. Thank you for your understanding so far!

    Hello @Heather Peake ,

Thank you for posting your valuable question on Microsoft Q&A forum.

Could you let us know when this issue first occurred in your tenant? This information will help us determine whether it might be related to a recent Microsoft update or change.

In the meantime, here are a few steps you can try:

Enable Class Notebook in OneNote for Windows devices

    • In your OneNote desktop app, Go to File > Options > General > Class Notebook > Enable Class Notebook.
    • This will restore the Class Notebook tab in OneNote if it’s currently hidden.

    User's image

Create a Class Notebook from existing content in Teams

In Microsoft Teams, every Class Team includes a Class Notebook by default. To reuse content:

    • Go to your Class Team > Class Notebook tab.
    • Select Set up a OneNote Class Notebook > From existing notebook content.
    • Choose sections from your old notebook to copy into the new one.

For your reference: Set up a Class Notebook in Teams using existing content

If you’re still seeing the “Something went wrong, please retry” message, please try to Clear Teams Cache

    On Windows:

    • Navigate to your Taskbar and look for the Microsoft Teams icon. Right-click the icon and choose Quit. This will force the Teams app to quit.
    • Next, copy and paste the following location into File Explorer: %appdata%\Microsoft\Teams, and delete the contents of the entire folder.
    • Restart Microsoft Teams by opening the application and logging back in.

    On a Mac:

    • Right-click the Teams icon in the taskbar and choose Quit.
    • Next, delete the directory ~/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/Teams.
    • Restart Microsoft Teams by opening the application and logging back in.

    On Mobile device (iOS/Android)

There’s no manual cache clearing option, but you can:

    • Sign out and sign back in.
    • Or uninstall and reinstall the app to reset the cache.

Note: Deleting the cache won't remove Microsoft Teams from your device, but will remove the web client cache, icons, thumbnails, local message history, your Teams display images, and any other Teams add-ons.

    Contact Microsoft Technical Support Team

If the issue still persists, then it may need deeper troubleshoot from the Microsoft Technical Support Team, you can follow these steps to request a support ticket:

    1. Find your Microsoft 365 admin: If you don't know who the global admin is in your organization, you can find guidance here: How can I find my Microsoft 365 admin? - Microsoft Support
    2. Submit a service request: The Global Administrator should create a support request with Microsoft to receive advanced technical assistance. For detailed instructions, see: Get support - Microsoft 365 admin | Microsoft Learn

If you discover any solutions or have additional insights, please consider replying to this thread to help others in the community.

I sincerely apologize for redirecting you to the Microsoft Technical Support Team. While we strive to assist as much as possible here in the forum, our resources are limited when it comes to backend-level diagnostics and advanced troubleshooting. Some issues require deeper technical analysis and access to internal tools that only the official support team can provide.

If you need further assistance, feel free to reply. I'm here and happy to help!

    Hi

Thank you for coming back to me.

We have had issues creating class notebooks on and off for a bit.

The latest issue I think started about two days ago and I am wondering if it is related to the sharepoint incident that seems to be mentioned in the admin centre.

I've checked the OneNote app - and the enable class notebook is already on.

I have just cleared the teams cache (which is no longer where your notes say it is) and restarted but its still doing it. Its not creating and just giving me something went wrong Retry.
