"GetReaderModel API Error" on iOS OneNote Office 365

The following error appears when engaging Immersive Reader on my iOS OneNote app.
"GetReaderModel API error: "", Response HTTP code: 0"

I inserted a picture I had saved on my Camera Roll which I had taken with Microsoft Lens app. I tap on the Immersive Reader feature, and the error appears in a pop-up window. I understand IR should work with images of text.

  • I am logged into with my Office 365 Education K-12 account.
  • My OneNote iOS app version is 16.103.4.

Please advise.

    Hi @Lisa Lukens,

Thank you for reaching out to the Microsoft Q&A Forum.

The error you’re seeing usually occurs due to a temporary server-side issue, specifically when the Immersive Reader API service becomes unavailable. The HTTP code “0” indicates that the backend did not respond, rather than a problem on your device.

In the meantime, you can continue using the Immersive Reader feature through OneNote Online, where it remains fully functional.

To help address this issue more effectively, I recommend reporting it to the Microsoft Support team. They can escalate the matter to the internal development team for further investigation. Your IT administrator can submit a support ticket using their admin credentials via the Microsoft 365 Admin Center. For direct assistance, Microsoft provides customer service phone numbers based on your region, which you can find here: Customer service phone numbers – Microsoft Support.

At the same time, we truly value your feedback. Since this feature is important to your workflow, please consider submitting a suggestion through the OneNote Community. This is the most effective way to ensure your input reaches the product team for future improvements. Once you’ve shared your feedback, feel free to post the link here. I’ll gladly upvote it to help increase visibility.User's image

Thank you again for your time and for raising this important concern.

The "GetReaderModel API error: "", Response HTTP code: 0" you are encountering while using the Immersive Reader feature in OneNote on iOS could be due to several reasons. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot the issue:

    1. Check Internet Connection: Ensure that your device has a stable internet connection, as the Immersive Reader may require online access to function properly.
    2. Update OneNote App: Make sure that your OneNote app is updated to the latest version. Sometimes, bugs are fixed in newer releases.
    3. Image Quality: Verify that the image you inserted contains clear and readable text. Immersive Reader works best with high-quality images.
    4. Reinsert the Image: Try removing the image and reinserting it to see if that resolves the issue.
    5. Log Out and Log In: Log out of your Office 365 account in the OneNote app and then log back in. This can sometimes refresh your session and resolve API errors.
    6. Reinstall the App: If the problem persists, consider uninstalling and reinstalling the OneNote app to clear any potential corrupted data.

If none of these steps resolve the issue, it may be beneficial to reach out to Microsoft Support for further assistance, especially since you are using an educational account.

The OneNote Online on the Safari app on and iOS iPad does not have the Insert > File or Insert > Picture from File or Camera Roll available. So, we cannot import a .pdf or .jpeg in order in use the Immersive Reader. Please advise.
