Body:

Hi everyone,

I've encountered an audio bug on Windows 11 and wanted to share it here to see if anyone else has experienced the same, and hopefully get it on the radar of the right people.

System Version:

Windows 11 25H2 (OS Build 26200.7623)

Issue Description:

After using a Bluetooth speaker or headphones for about 30 minutes, if I disconnect the Bluetooth device (turn it off) while music is still playing, and then immediately try to play any sound through the built-in speakers (e.g., watch a video, play music), the system says no output device is found, or that a sound card driver is missing. All media players show errors or remain silent.

The weird part: Restarting the PC does not fix the issue. The speakers remain non-functional.

Workaround Found (by accident) :

  1. Go to Settings -> System -> Sound and select your speakers under "Output".
  2. Look for the "Audio Enhancements" option (it's usually "Off" by default) and turn it On.
  3. Then click on "Output settings format" below, select any format, and click "Test" .
  4. If you hear the test tone, the issue is resolved! At this point, you can turn "Audio Enhancements" back Off (restore default).
  5. The speakers will now work normally again. No restart needed.

Personal Guess:

It seems like disconnecting the Bluetooth device might cause a conflict with the system's audio driver, causing the audio service to hang. The steps above essentially force a reset of the audio driver.

Reproducibility:

It doesn't happen 100% of the time, but it's more likely to occur after a long Bluetooth session (around 30 mins) followed by disconnecting while audio is playing, then immediately switching to speakers.

Sharing this for anyone else running into the same issue, especially those on Insider/Test builds. If anyone from the Microsoft team sees this, it would be great if the audio switching logic during Bluetooth disconnection could be reviewed.

Thanks!

    Hi @AB_NO_GPU Chris

Thank you for posting your question in the Microsoft Q&A forum.

I appreciated l that you are sharing such a clear description of the issue and the workaround you discovered since audio problems like this can be frustrating, especially when they persist across restarts.

Since this behavior is occurring on Windows 11 (OS Build 26200.7623) and appears to be tied to a specific Bluetooth audio scenario, as Microsoft user I highly suggest submitting this through Feedback Hub. Submitting feedback allows issues like this to be formally recorded along with diagnostic data, which can help with investigation.

    • Press Windows key + F or search for Feedback Hub in the Start menu.
    • Sign in with your Microsoft account.
    • Click Report a Problem
    • Add screenshots if possible.

For more details, please refer to: Send feedback to Microsoft with the Feedback Hub app

Sharing your experience here is useful for other users who may encounter the same behavior, and submitting feedback helps ensure the issue is documented with full context.

As forum moderators, we are not directly involved in product design decisions and do not have access to the development roadmap. However, we want to assure you that your feedback has been acknowledged and is truly valued.

Thank you again for taking the time to provide constructive feedback. It’s valuable in helping improve the overall Windows experience.

It seems that you are experiencing an audio issue on Windows 11 where the system fails to recognize the built-in speakers after disconnecting a Bluetooth device. This type of problem can occur due to conflicts between the audio drivers and the system's audio service, particularly when switching from Bluetooth to built-in audio.

Your workaround of toggling the "Audio Enhancements" setting appears to effectively reset the audio driver, allowing the speakers to function again without needing to restart the PC. This suggests that the audio service may not be handling the transition between audio devices smoothly, especially after prolonged use of Bluetooth devices.

To further troubleshoot this issue, consider the following steps:

    1. Ensure that your audio drivers are up to date. You can check for updates through Device Manager or the manufacturer's website.
    2. If the issue persists, you might want to run the audio troubleshooter from the Settings app under System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
    3. Additionally, verify that all audio endpoints are connected and capable of streaming, as outlined in troubleshooting guides for audio testing.

If this issue continues to be a problem, it may be beneficial to report it through the Windows Feedback Hub to bring it to the attention of Microsoft for further investigation.
