    Hi John,

Do you get an activation error?

Is it an iPad or an Android Tablet? Here is an idea about Tablet policy of 365:

    • 10.1 inches or smaller — basic editing is free on both iPad and Android tablets, no subscription needed.
    • Larger than 10.1 inches — a paid Microsoft 365 subscription is required to edit documents; the apps will not allow free core editing.

I hope this information helps. If you have any more questions, don't hesitate to reach out.

Otherwise, please take a moment to rate the answer. Wishing you good luck!

Several common issues can prevent editing documents on a tablet. Work through these checks:

    1. Check if the files are read-only or marked as Final
If a document is marked as Final, it becomes read-only on mobile devices and cannot be changed directly. In that case, create a copy and edit the copy:
      • Open the file on the tablet.
      • On iOS: tap the file icon, then Name or Duplicate, give it a new name and location, then tap Save or Duplicate.
      • On Android: tap File (or the file icon) > Save As, choose a location, enter a new name, and tap Save.
    2. Check if the file type is supported for editing on mobile
On tablets/phones, only certain formats can be edited:
      • Can edit: .docx (Word documents), .dotx (Word templates on iOS), some others depending on platform.
      • Read-only only: older .doc, .odt, .pdf, .rtf, .txt, macro-enabled .docm, and several web/HTML formats. These will open but not allow changes until converted to .docx. If the file opens as read-only due to format, open it in Word and use Save As to save it as a .docx file, then edit that version.
    3. Check for protection (passwords, restricted editing, IRM)
      Documents that are:
      • Password protected (especially “password to modify”),
      • Protected with restricted editing rights or rights management (IRM), or
      • Digitally signed or marked as final, may open read-only on mobile. In these cases, either remove the protection in the desktop version of Word or make and edit a copy, as above.
    4. Check if the file is locked by another user or app instance
If the document is stored in a shared location (OneDrive, SharePoint, etc.) and someone else has it open in the desktop app, editing may be blocked. Close the file on other devices, then reopen it on the tablet.
If no one else is using it, fully close the Office app on the tablet (force close), then reopen and try again.
    5. Check subscription or app state
If a Microsoft 365 subscription has expired or the app is in a restricted state, editing and saving can be disabled and documents appear view-only. Renewing the subscription or reinstalling the app has resolved similar issues for other users.

    If the issue persists, note:

    • The exact app (Word for iPad, Word for Android, Office Mobile, etc.).
    • The file type (e.g., .docx, .doc, .pdf).
    • Any banner or message at the top of the document (for example, “Read-Only”, “Marked as Final”, “Protected View”).
