Hello,

I am trying to activate Windows on my PC using a valid product key, but the activation keeps failing.

The system shows the error:

0x803fa067 – Unable to activate Windows because a valid digital licence or product key cannot be found.

I already tried:

  • Running the Activation Troubleshooter
  • Signing in with my Microsoft account
  • Entering the product key again

The troubleshooter message also says that hardware on this device may have changed recently.

However, I do have a valid product key and it was working before.

Could you please help me understand why Windows cannot activate and what steps I should follow to activate it correctly?

    Hello,

How did you obtain your license initially?

Did it come with the device preinstalled, or did you purchase it?

If you purchased it, did you purchase from Microsoft, or from third party?

Is it originally a Win7/8 key?

Just to make sure, there's no motherboard change involved here?

Also, is this a reinstall, or it was working, but then stopped working out of the blue ?

Can you please type cmd in the search on the taskbar and hit enter to launch command prompt, then run the following command:

    slmgr /dlv

Then share a screenshot please. Thanks!

Error 0x803FA067 indicates Windows cannot find a valid license for the current hardware, often after a significant hardware change (such as motherboard replacement) or when the product key used is not valid for activation.

Based on the provided details and the documented causes, the most likely reasons and steps are:

    1. Confirm the product key is valid and usable
Error 0x803FA067 is listed among errors that occur when:
      • A product key that cannot be used to activate Windows was entered, or
      • Activation servers are busy, or
      • A free-upgrade-based license is being reused in a way that is no longer supported.
      Action:
      • Go to Start > Settings > System > Activation > Change product key and re-enter the 25-character key exactly as provided.
      • If activation still fails with 0x803FA067, the key may not be valid for this device or edition, and a different key or a new license is required.
    2. Check for edition mismatch (key vs installed edition)
If the product key is for a different edition than what is installed (for example, key is for Windows 11 Home but Windows 11 Pro is installed), activation will fail. Action:
      • In Settings > System > Activation, confirm the installed edition (Home, Pro, etc.).
      • Ensure the product key matches that edition. If not, either install the correct edition or use a key that matches the installed edition.
    3. Address recent hardware changes (digital license not matching hardware)
The troubleshooter message that hardware may have changed indicates Windows is trying to match a digital license to the new hardware and failing. Action:
      • If the license was originally a digital license tied to the old hardware, and a major change (like motherboard replacement) was done, use the activation troubleshooter’s hardware-change path:
        • Go to Start > Settings > System > Activation and select Troubleshoot.
        • If available, choose the option to reactivate after a hardware change and follow the prompts.
      • If Windows originally came preinstalled on the device and the motherboard was replaced, a new license may be required if the OEM license cannot be transferred.
    4. Use a valid product key if no license is found
When Windows reports that no valid license is found after hardware changes, a valid product key must be supplied. Action:
      • If a valid retail product key is available (for Windows 10/11 matching the installed edition), use Change product key in Activation settings to activate.
      • If the key was used previously on different hardware and is not transferable (for example, OEM or certain upgrade paths), purchase a new license via Settings > System > Activation > Go to Microsoft Store.
    5. If the key came from a previous free upgrade or non-transferable source
Some older upgrade paths (for example, free upgrades from earlier Windows versions) are no longer reusable on new hardware. In such cases, even if the key worked before, it may no longer activate on a new device. Action:
      • If the key originated from a free upgrade or similar offer and no longer activates, a new Windows 11 license is required.
    6. If activation still fails
If all above steps fail and the product key is believed to be valid and retail, use the activation options provided in Windows (including phone activation where available) or purchase a new license from the Microsoft Store via Activation settings.
