Alias Question - Live.com

’m hoping someone here has run into this before.

I have a 20+ year old Microsoft account with a @live.com alias. It still shows under Account Info, but:

  • It’s missing from sign-in aliases
  • I can’t enable it for login
  • It’s not receiving emails

I had removed it from sign-in preferences earlier, and since then it seems to be in a weird state.

This doesn’t look like a UI/config issue—it feels like the alias exists in metadata but is detached from identity and mail routing.

Has anyone seen this before? Were you able to get it reattached, or is this effectively irreversible with live.com aliases?

Hello, thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A.

According to the Microsoft article below, if you remove a Microsoft domain address (alias) such as Hotmail.com, Outlook.com, MSN.com, or Live.com, you are permanently deleting that email address. It cannot be attached to any other Microsoft account again, nor can you create a new account with that address.

Going forward, you can create a new Outlook.com alias and set it as your primary address. (OR), you can continue using your existing alias (address) to sign in. Just make sure you notify your friends, neighbors, and other contacts that your email address has changed.

For a @live.com address that was removed from sign-in and now no longer receives mail, this is effectively irreversible.

When an alias from a Microsoft-owned domain such as @live.com, @hotmail.com, @outlook.com, or @msn.com is removed from a Microsoft account, that alias is permanently deleted and cannot be associated with any Microsoft account again. This applies even if the address still appears in some account metadata or historical views:

    • It will not be available as a sign-in alias.
    • It cannot be re-enabled for sign-in.
    • It will not send or receive email.
    • Attempts to re-add it as an alias will fail because it is no longer a valid, attachable Microsoft alias.

The behavior described (still visible in some account info, but missing from sign-in aliases and not receiving mail) matches the documented outcome of removing a Microsoft-domain alias: the visible remnants do not indicate that the alias can be restored or “reattached.”

The only supported path forward is to use or add another alias (for example, an existing non-Microsoft email address or a new Outlook.com address) and make that the primary alias for sign-in and mail.
