I would like to cancel a Exchange Online (plan 1) subscription but do not have a global admin or access to admin account. Small business - one person, email address.

    Dear @Marsha Block,

Good day! Thank you for posting your question in the Microsoft Q&A forum.

I want to begin by sincerely apologizing for the frustration and inconvenience this issue has caused you.

Since canceling a subscription requires action and approval from the Billing team, and you are the only admin but currently cannot access your account, here are some steps I recommend you try:

Method 1: Contact Microsoft Data Protection Support by Phone

Since you are locked out, the most direct method is to call Microsoft's support line to raise a request for cancelling the unexpected subscription. For a full list of regional numbers, you can also visit this official page: Customer service phone numbers - Microsoft Support. The support team will assist you as soon as possible.

Method 2: Create a Temporary Account (Trial Tenant) to Submit a Support Ticket

If you have difficulty reaching an agent by phone, there is a reliable workaround. This involves creating a new, temporary Microsoft 365 account to contact the support team online.

    • Sign up for a new Microsoft 365 Business trial using this link: Compare All Microsoft 365 Plans.
    • Once the trial account is created, log in to its Admin Center.
    • From the Admin Center, open a new Service Request.
    • In the ticket description, explain that you need to cancel the subscription of your primary tenant (your.onmicrosoft.com) and that you need to speak with the Billing team.
    • For reference:  Get support | Microsoft Docs

Important: Please remember to cancel the trial subscription after your original account issue is resolved to avoid any future charges.

Once you can reach out to the Billing Team, you can share:

    • Your administrator account email address for the tenant.
    • The domain name of your tenant
    • Last 4 digits of the card used
    • Details about the issues you are experiencing
    • A screenshot (optional but helpful)

Contact a Reseller (if applicable): If your Office subscriptions are managed through a federated partner or reseller and the Global Admin cannot open a service request, they should contact the reseller’s support provider. The reseller can assist with initiating the request and coordinating with the Office support team.

Please understand that as forum moderator, my primary goal is to provide helpful guidance and support through general troubleshooting steps. While I don’t have access to internal systems required to resolve account issues, I truly appreciate your understanding of these limitations. I genuinely hope the information I share helps guide you in the right direction, and I'm always here to assist as much as I can within my scope.

I hope this helps! Please feel free to reply below if you have any update or further concern.

Your understanding and co-operation are highly appreciated. Thanks for your precious time. Have a nice day!

Canceling an Exchange Online (Plan 1) subscription for a Microsoft 365 business tenant requires access to an admin account; there is no supported way to cancel a business subscription without a Global Administrator or other appropriate admin role.

For a one‑person small business, the owner of the subscription is typically also the Global Administrator. To proceed, one of these must happen:

    1. Recover or sign in to the admin account
      • Use the Microsoft 365 admin center with the admin credentials to cancel the subscription.
      • If the admin account can be recovered (for example via password reset or account recovery), then follow the standard business cancellation steps:
        1. Go to the Microsoft 365 admin center.
        2. In BillingYour products (or Subscriptions in Simplified view), select the Exchange Online (Plan 1) subscription.
        3. Use Cancel subscription (MOSA) or Cancel subscription / turn off recurring billing (MCA), depending on the billing account type.
    2. If the admin account truly cannot be accessed
      • For business subscriptions, Microsoft requires proof of ownership and admin access to make account‑level changes, including cancellation. Without that, cancellation through Microsoft is not supported.
      • In that situation, the practical option is to stop payment at the payment provider (bank or card issuer) so future charges are declined. This approach is consistent with guidance where account access is not available.

Once admin access is available, use the documented business cancellation flow:

    • Determine billing account type (MCA vs MOSA) and follow the corresponding steps under Steps to cancel your subscription in the Microsoft 365 admin center.
    • If unable to cancel online even as admin (for example, more than 7 days after renewal with MCA), turn off recurring billing and let the subscription expire at term end.
