The laptop most likely came with a 1-year Microsoft 365 trial or pre-installed apps that still require a valid subscription linked to an account. When that trial or included term ends, Office apps will keep asking to subscribe or activate.
To resolve the repeated subscription prompts:
- Check what subscription is actually on the account
Sign in to the Microsoft account used on the laptop and verify whether there is an active Microsoft 365 Personal or Family subscription. If there is only Microsoft 365 Basic, that plan does not include desktop Office apps; they will continue to show subscription/activation messages and eventually go into reduced functionality mode. In that case, upgrade to a plan that includes desktop apps.
- If the subscription really is expired or missing
The yellow bars like “Renew your subscription” or “Subscription expired” mean the included term has ended. To keep using the desktop apps without interruption, select Buy or Reactivate → Buy in the banner and complete purchase of a new Microsoft 365 subscription. If a new, unused product key card was provided with the laptop, choose Enter Key and enter that key.
- If a physical card or key was included with the laptop
Even if payment was made at Currys, the subscription does not start until the product key is redeemed. Go to the setup site printed on the card or in the email receipt and enter the key. If this step was never done, the apps will keep asking for a subscription.
- If prompts continue after renewal/activation
- Make sure the correct Microsoft account (the one with the active subscription) is signed into Word/Excel/PowerPoint.
- Close all Office apps and reopen them after renewing or redeeming the key.
- If still seeing notices, check the subscription’s expiration date online; if it looks wrong, contact Microsoft Support.
- If there is no qualifying subscription at all
Without an active Microsoft 365 Personal or Family subscription, the desktop apps will eventually run in reduced functionality mode (can open/print but not edit or create documents). In that case, either:
- Purchase a qualifying Microsoft 365 subscription, or
- Use the free web versions of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint via Office.com / microsoft365.com.
For billing or country-specific issues (for example, if the subscription was tied to a different region), contact Microsoft Support for direct assistance.
