A family of Microsoft word processing software products for creating web, email, and print documents.
On Mac, inability to edit existing or new Word documents is often caused by either:
- An expired Microsoft 365 subscription
- The document being in an older/blocked or compatibility format
Try these steps in order:
- Check Microsoft 365 subscription status
- Sign in to the Microsoft account used for Microsoft 365.
- Verify that the Microsoft 365 subscription is active and not expired.
- If it has expired, renew the subscription. Once renewed, editing and saving documents should work again.
- If the issue is only with specific old documents (especially .doc or very old formats)
- Make sure Office is fully updated:
- Open any Office app.
- On the Help menu, select Check for Updates.
- Select Automatically keep Microsoft apps up to date.
- Select Update and install all available updates.
- Try opening the file via Word’s File menu with text recovery:
- In Word, go to File > Open.
- Select the old document once.
- In the Open dropdown, choose Recover Text, then select Open (confirm any warning).
- After it opens, go to File > Save As.
- In File Format, choose Word Document (.docx) and select Save.
- Make sure Office is fully updated:
- If the document shows [Compatibility Mode] in the title bar
- Convert it to the modern format:
- Go to File > Save As.
- In Format, choose Word Document (.docx).
- If using Word for Mac 2011, clear Maintain compatibility with Word 98-2004.
- Select Save.
- Convert it to the modern format:
- If the file is in OpenDocument format (.odt, .ods, .odp)
- Ensure the Mac is connected to the internet.
- Open the ODF file in Word for Mac; it will be converted to an editable OOXML file (.docx, .xlsx, .pptx).
- If a particular file still won’t open or edit
- It may be damaged. Try:
- Opening it with Apple TextEdit for basic text recovery.
- Checking Time Machine or other backups for an earlier, working version.
- Using the damaged-document guidance in Troubleshooting damaged documents in Word for Mac.
- It may be damaged. Try:
If none of the above helps and Word itself is failing (errors when starting or opening any file), run an Office repair or reinstall as described in the referenced Q&A posts.
