On Mac, inability to edit existing or new Word documents is often caused by either:

    1. An expired Microsoft 365 subscription
    2. The document being in an older/blocked or compatibility format

    Try these steps in order:

    1. Check Microsoft 365 subscription status
      • Sign in to the Microsoft account used for Microsoft 365.
      • Verify that the Microsoft 365 subscription is active and not expired.
      • If it has expired, renew the subscription. Once renewed, editing and saving documents should work again.
    2. If the issue is only with specific old documents (especially .doc or very old formats)
      • Make sure Office is fully updated:
        1. Open any Office app.
        2. On the Help menu, select Check for Updates.
        3. Select Automatically keep Microsoft apps up to date.
        4. Select Update and install all available updates.
      • Try opening the file via Word’s File menu with text recovery:
        1. In Word, go to File > Open.
        2. Select the old document once.
        3. In the Open dropdown, choose Recover Text, then select Open (confirm any warning).
        4. After it opens, go to File > Save As.
        5. In File Format, choose Word Document (.docx) and select Save.
    3. If the document shows [Compatibility Mode] in the title bar
      • Convert it to the modern format:
        1. Go to File > Save As.
        2. In Format, choose Word Document (.docx).
        3. If using Word for Mac 2011, clear Maintain compatibility with Word 98-2004.
        4. Select Save.
    4. If the file is in OpenDocument format (.odt, .ods, .odp)
      • Ensure the Mac is connected to the internet.
      • Open the ODF file in Word for Mac; it will be converted to an editable OOXML file (.docx, .xlsx, .pptx).
    5. If a particular file still won’t open or edit

If none of the above helps and Word itself is failing (errors when starting or opening any file), run an Office repair or reinstall as described in the referenced Q&A posts.
