Updating or downgrading Windows is usually not required to fix speaker issues after an update. Try these steps in order on Windows 11 Pro:
- Confirm the correct output device
- Select the Speakers icon on the taskbar.
- Select the arrow to the right of the volume slider.
- Make sure the actual speakers (not a monitor, HDMI, or Bluetooth device) are selected as the output device.
- Set the default output device in Settings
- Select Start > Settings > System > Sound.
- In the Output section, select the speakers that should play sound. Selecting them here also sets them as the default.
- Run the Windows audio troubleshooter
- Use the Get Help audio troubleshooter: Run the troubleshooter in Get Help.
- Let it detect and attempt to fix audio problems.
- Update or reinstall the audio driver
- Open Device Manager (search for “device manager” from Start).
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right‑click the audio device (for example, Realtek, High Definition Audio, or similar) and select Update driver > Search automatically for drivers.
- If no newer driver is found or sound still does not work, right‑click the device again and select Uninstall device, check “Attempt to remove the driver for this device,” then select Uninstall.
- Restart the PC so Windows reinstalls the driver automatically.
- Try the generic Windows audio driver
- In Device Manager, right‑click the audio device > Update driver.
- Select Browse my computer for drivers > Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer.
- Choose the generic High Definition Audio device, select Next, and complete installation.
- If the issue started immediately after an update
- In Device Manager, right‑click the audio device > Properties.
- On the Driver tab, select Roll Back Driver and follow the prompts.
- If roll back is not available or does not help, use a system restore point created before the update (see “Restore from a system restore point” in Recovery options in Windows).
Downgrading the entire OS should be a last resort; in most cases, correcting the default device, fixing or rolling back the audio driver, or using the generic driver resolves post‑update speaker failures.
