During Login, and when entering Password, the message appears many times: "login too many times". After resetting password, login without the appearance of this message for a few times, then the message "login too many times" appears again, and the user cannot login.

Please help!

Thanks!

Daniel

Hello, thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A.

Have you checked your Microsoft account's recent activity page to see if there's any unusual activity on your account?

To check this, you can log in to your account on the Recent Activity page here: https://account.live.com/Activity

Do you have a VPN enabled when accessing Microsoft services like OneDrive or Outlook? You may also receive this error if Microsoft servers detect that you're accessing from a different region or location. For security reasons, your account may be blocked.

For now, please do not try to sign in with your Microsoft account or reset your password. Wait 24 hours (a cool-down period), then try signing in to your account again.

If you can't log in, (temporary workaround)

On the password entry screen, select "Other ways to sign in" and use one of your alternative security contact methods, such as your phone number or email address, to verify your identity and see if you can log in successfully.

    If you can log in,

Go to your security settings page here and log in - https://account.live.com/proofs/Manage

Make sure you have two-step verification enabled on your Microsoft account.

(Check if you have at least three security verification methods active to verify your identity)

The repeated “login too many times” behavior indicates that the account is being temporarily blocked after multiple sign‑in attempts are detected as unusual. This is consistent with Microsoft’s protection mechanisms for accounts that use Microsoft Entra multifactor authentication or similar security.

Use these steps to stabilize sign‑in:

    1. Stop trying to sign in for a while
      • After several failed or repeated attempts, further attempts are blocked for a period of time.
      • Wait for the lockout period to expire before trying again. To be safe, avoid any sign‑in attempts for at least 24 hours.
    2. Use a different sign‑in method (if available)
      • If the account has multiple verification methods configured (for example, Microsoft Authenticator, SMS, alternate email), try another method when prompted.
      • If another method works, sign in and review/update the security info and sign‑in preferences for the account.
    3. Check for suspicious activity
      • If this behavior appears without obvious cause, it may indicate someone else is repeatedly trying to access the account.
      • In that case, contact the organization’s IT administrator or Help desk and ask them to:
        • Review Microsoft Entra sign‑in logs for the account.
        • Check for misconfigured MFA settings or unusual sign‑in locations.
    4. If problems persist after waiting
      • If the message continues after the waiting period and password reset, the account may be blocked due to suspected malicious activity.
      • The IT administrator should investigate and, if appropriate, unblock the account and adjust any conditional access or MFA policies that might be causing repeated lockouts.

If this is a work or school account and none of the above resolves the issue, the next step is to contact the organization’s Help desk so an admin can review the sign‑in logs and MFA configuration.
