I’m trying to add an email to my Authenticator app but it’s making me verify the account within the app which I cannot do.

To add the email account to Microsoft Authenticator when the app keeps asking to verify inside the app, another authentication method must be used or the existing MFA configuration must be reset by an admin or via the account’s security page.

Use one of these paths based on the type of account:

    1. For personal Microsoft accounts (Outlook.com, Hotmail, etc.)
    2. Sign in to the account security page from a browser where sign-in still works:
      • Go to the Microsoft account security page and open Additional/Advanced security options.
    3. Under Ways to sign in or verify, ensure there is at least one alternative method (SMS, email code, or another authenticator app). If there is:
      • Use that method to approve sign-in instead of the Authenticator prompt.
    4. If the goal is to go passwordless or fix the Authenticator loop:
      • Turn on Passwordless account using the Microsoft Authenticator app as described in the passwordless article, then turn it off again to re-establish password-based sign-in.
      • After that, re-add the account in Microsoft Authenticator by following the prompts and scanning the QR code when asked.
    5. For work or school accounts (Microsoft Entra / Microsoft 365)
    6. If another method exists (SMS, phone call, another app):
      • Choose Sign in another way on the sign-in page and use that method to complete sign-in.
      • Once signed in, go to the organization’s security info page and add or reconfigure the Authenticator method.
    7. If no alternative method works and the app keeps looping:
      • Contact the organization’s IT admin and ask them to Require re-register multifactor authentication for the user account in the Microsoft Entra admin center. This clears the old Authenticator binding so the app can be set up from scratch.
      • If Conditional Access or registration policies are blocking setup, the admin must adjust those policies as described in the setup error guidance.
    8. If completely locked out (no alternative method, no admin access)
    • For business/education tenants where the user is the only admin, contact Microsoft Support (Data Protection team) by phone so they can verify identity and reset MFA from their side.
    • For personal accounts, use the account recovery and support options from the Microsoft account security site to regain access, then reconfigure Authenticator.

If the app shows specific error messages (for example, about restricted location, not enough authentication methods, or push notifications), follow the corresponding troubleshooting steps:

    • If told to go to aka.ms/mfasetup, complete the setup there first, then add the account in Authenticator.
    • If registration is blocked by admin policies or location restrictions, the admin must enable or adjust those policies.
    • On Android, ensure push notifications, Google Play Services, device PIN/biometric, and device registration are correctly configured before enabling passwordless or adding the work/school account.
