It depends, are you using the Office apps on a Windows device?

If so, press and hold the Ctrl key on your keyboard when you start Excel to run Excel in Safe Mode, does it open Correctly?

If so, disable any add-ons you may have added to Excel, then check if Excel will open in Normal Mode.

If that does not resolve the problem, the best option is to perform a full repair of your Office installation.

Open the Settings App (gear icon on your Start Menu)

Go to Apps - Installed Apps, then scroll down to find Microsoft Office

Select that and choose Modify - Online Repair

That should fix any issues with your Office Installation.

Try these steps in order until Excel works again:

1. Start Excel in Safe Mode
   • On Windows 11/10: select Start > All apps > Windows System > Run.
   • Type Excel /safe and select OK.
   • If Excel opens in safe mode, the problem is likely an add-in.
2. Disable COM Add-ins
   • In Excel, select File > Options > Add-ins.
   • At the bottom, choose COM Add-ins and select Go.
   • Clear all check boxes, select OK, then close Excel.
   • Open Excel normally (not in safe mode) and test.
   • If Excel works, re-enable add-ins one by one, restarting Excel each time, to find the problematic add-in.
3. Check Excel add-ins via the registry (advanced)
   • This is advanced and can cause serious problems if done incorrectly. Back up the registry first. For details, see How to back up and restore the registry in Windows.
   • Press Windows key + R, type regedit.exe, select OK.
   • Go to: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\<1x.0>\Excel\Options (for Excel 2016 or newer, <1x.0> is 16.0).
   • In the Name column, look for any REG_SZ values named OPEN (or OPEN1, etc.).
   • Right-click OPEN, select Rename, change it to RenamedOPEN and press Enter.
   • For any other OPEN* values, rename them to start with Renamed (for example, OPEN1 → RenamedOPEN1).
   • Start Excel in normal mode and test.
   • If Excel works, re-enable add-ins one by one by removing Renamed from each name, restarting Excel after each change, to identify the problematic add-in.
4. Investigate startup folders
   • Excel automatically opens workbooks in the XLStart folder and any alternate startup folder.
   • Move files out of these startup folders temporarily and then start Excel to see if one of those files is causing the problem.
5. Perform a selective startup (clean boot)
   • Other programs or services may conflict with Excel.
   • Follow the steps for the version of Windows in Run Selective Startup using System Configuration to perform a selective startup.
   • Test Excel in this clean environment to see if the issue is caused by another application or service.
6. Repair Microsoft 365/Office
   • Repairing Office can fix corrupted components that stop Excel from working.
   • Follow the steps in Repair a Microsoft 365 application to run an Online Repair, which reinstalls Office components.
7. Check environmental factors if Excel still hangs or crashes
   • Save the Excel file locally instead of on a network, SharePoint, or remote location to see if storage location is causing issues.
   • Ensure the PC has enough RAM for large, heavily formatted workbooks. See System requirements for Office 2016.
   • Test with a different default printer (for example, Microsoft XPS Document Writer) and/or a basic video driver, because printer or video drivers can affect Excel performance.
