Lately, Excel 365 has been crashing constantly while trying to edit any file. When in the file, cells can be selected, but once something is input, the program freezes and then crashes within a few seconds. WTF???????????

Hello, thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A.

May I please know whether you experience the same issue when editing Excel files in Safe Mode?

Press the Windows + R keys, type excel /safe, and select OK.

In Excel Safe Mode, open any spreadsheet file and check whether you can edit it normally. This will help us determine whether any third-party Excel add-ins are causing Excel to freeze while editing.

Alternatively, you can try repairing your Office applications to see if that resolves the issue. Please make sure you perform an Online Repair of Office.

Use the following steps to troubleshoot Excel 365 crashing while editing any file:

    1. Install the latest updates
      • Make sure Windows Update is set to automatically download and install recommended updates.
      • Install all important, recommended, and optional updates for Microsoft 365 and Windows. This replaces out-of-date files and fixes known issues. See Update Microsoft 365 and your computer.
    2. Check for known crash issues
      • Excel has had recent crash and performance issues that may match this behavior. Review the “Excel crashes and slow performance issues” section and apply any listed fixes or workarounds that match the scenario, such as issues when switching worksheets or using specific Windows 11 IME or clipboard scenarios.
    3. Repair Microsoft 365
      • A corrupted Office installation can cause Excel to freeze and crash when editing.
      • Run a repair of Microsoft 365:
        1. Go to Settings → Apps → Installed apps (or Programs and Features).
        2. Select Microsoft 365/Office → Modify.
        3. Choose the repair option as described in Repair a Microsoft 365 application.
    4. Check environmental factors
      • File location: Move a crashing workbook to a local drive and test. Issues can occur when files are opened from redirected folders, SharePoint, Webfolders, Remote Desktop/Citrix, network appliances, or virtualized environments.
      • Memory: Large workbooks with lots of formatting and shapes need sufficient RAM. Verify the system meets Office requirements.
      • Printers and video drivers: Excel is printer-intensive and checks default printer and video drivers at startup. Test by switching to a different printer driver (for example, Microsoft XPS Document Writer) or a basic video driver to see if crashes stop.
    5. Check startup workbooks
      • Problem workbooks that auto-open can destabilize Excel.
      • XLStart folder:
        1. File → Options → Trust Center → Trust Center Settings → Trusted Locations.
        2. Note the XLStart path and move all files out of that folder.
        3. Start Excel normally and test.
        4. If stable, move files back one by one to find the problematic workbook.
      • Alternate startup folder:
        1. File → Options → Advanced.
        2. Under General, note the path in “At Startup, open all files in”.
        3. Move files out, restart Excel, then add back one by one if the issue stops.
    6. Check add-ins and third‑party components
      • If using the “3DxWare 10 for Windows” PlugIn for Microsoft Office, Excel may stop responding when that add-in is version 10.8.7 or earlier. Update it to 10.8.8 or later from 3Dconnexion’s site, then re-add it to Excel using the steps in Add or remove add-ins in Excel.
      • Older versions of Bitdefender can cause Excel and other Office apps to crash. Update Bitdefender to version 1.12.77.0 or higher.
    7. Perform a selective startup (clean boot)
      • Background programs and services can conflict with Excel and cause crashes when editing.
      • Run a selective startup (clean boot) using System Configuration for the version of Windows in use (Windows 10/8/7, etc.) as described in the “Run Selective Startup using System Configuration” articles. This helps identify conflicting processes, services, or applications.
    8. Investigate file contents
      • If crashes happen more with certain files, check for heavy or problematic content:
        • Formulas referencing entire columns.
        • Array formulas with uneven argument sizes.
        • Hundreds or thousands of hidden objects.
        • Excessive styles from repeated copy/paste.
        • Excessive or invalid defined names.
      • Simplifying or cleaning such files can reduce crashes.

If, after these steps, Excel still hangs or crashes, contact Microsoft Support for guided troubleshooting.
