When I try to open WORD I get the following message

We're sorry, but Word has run into an error that is preventing it from working correctly. Word will need to be closed as a result.

It asks if I would like to repair now? I select Repair Now and the whole thing goes away.

The AI response is correct: you need to perform an Online Repair instead. For instructions, see https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/repair-an-office-application-7821d4b6-7c1d-4205-aa0e-a6b40c5bb88b .

Since an Online Repair usually requires a reinstall of Office, before you start the repair, make sure that you can access your account at https://account.microsoft.com/services and that Office is associated with it.

Run a full Office repair instead of using the in-app “Repair now” prompt, which is often ineffective.

    Follow these steps:

    1. Close all Office apps (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.).
    2. Open the Windows Settings app.
    3. Go to Apps > Apps & features (or Installed apps).
    4. Find the Microsoft Office / Microsoft 365 installation in the list.
    5. Select it and choose Modify.
    6. When prompted, choose Online Repair (not Quick Repair), then continue.
      • This runs a more thorough repair and may effectively reinstall Office.
    7. When the repair completes, restart the computer and try opening Word again.

If the error persists after an Online Repair, completely uninstall Office from Apps & features, restart the PC, then reinstall Office from the Microsoft account services page where the subscription/product is listed.
