To regain access after losing the Minecraft/Microsoft account credentials, follow these steps depending on what is still known.
- If the Microsoft account username (email) is forgotten:
- Use the official username lookup:
- Go to Forgotten your Microsoft account username and follow the steps to look up the username using a security phone number or alternate email. Search
- Request a security code to that phone/email, enter it, and a hint of the Microsoft account email (for example
j*******@outlook.com) will be shown.
- If no security info was set up, check products or services previously used:
- On a Windows 10/11 device where the account might still be signed in, go to Start > Settings > Accounts > Email & app accounts and look for the Microsoft account username.
- Check all email inboxes for receipts from Microsoft (game purchases, subscriptions). These receipts usually show which Microsoft account was used.
- If the account was used on Xbox, follow the Find your Microsoft email address walkthrough from the Xbox support link in the context.
- If the username is known but the password is forgotten or not working:
- Use the standard recovery flow:
- Go to Recover your account at https://account.live.com/password/reset (linked as Recover your account in the context).
- Enter the Microsoft account email/phone/Skype name used for Minecraft.
- Choose where to receive a security code (phone, alternate email, etc.), enter the code, then set a new password.
- If the message "We couldn't find an account with that username" appears, try any other aliases or phone numbers that might be on the account, and verify the domain (for example
.com vs .co.uk).
- If there is no access to any security info (phone, alternate email, authenticator) and the password is unknown:
- Use the Microsoft account recovery form:
- Read the guidance in Help with the Microsoft account recovery form and then submit the form using the account email believed to be correct.
- Provide as much detail as possible: old passwords, approximate creation date, devices used, and especially purchase information (transaction IDs, dates, amounts) for Minecraft and any other Microsoft Store purchases.
- The process is automated; if the information is insufficient, the request will be denied and the account cannot be recovered.
- If the account was hacked/compromised and security info was changed:
- Follow the hacked/compromised account guide referenced in the Q&A excerpts in the context.
- If the attacker has fully replaced the security info and the recovery form fails, the account is considered unrecoverable and Microsoft Support cannot override this.
- In that case, contact Minecraft Support (link in the context Q&A) to ask if they can offer any alternative for the Minecraft license.
- If the username truly cannot be found:
- Follow Check products or services where you used your Microsoft account to search all possible locations (Windows, Office apps, Xbox, email receipts) for the Microsoft account used to buy Minecraft.
- If still not found, it is possible the Microsoft account was closed or deleted and cannot be reopened.
Using the payment information: when filling the account recovery form, include all available payment details (card type, last digits, transaction IDs, dates, and amounts) for the Minecraft purchase. This increases the chance of proving ownership, but does not guarantee recovery.
