I am trying to share an excel file with my team in the form of a link, but every time I attempt to go to File -> Share -> Share with People, Excel applications produced an Error Code: 0x803d0014. I've restarted, cleared my cache, signed out and signed back in to my account, to no avail.

What else do I need to do here?

    Dear @Blake Scott,

Thank you for posting your question in the Microsoft Q&A forum.

Based on your description, the error code 0x803d0014 in Excel usually occurs when the application is unable to connect properly to the cloud sharing service (OneDrive or SharePoint) while trying to generate a sharing link.

Please try the following troubleshooting steps:

Verify that the workbook is stored in OneDrive or SharePoint

    • Go to File > Info and confirm the file location.
    • If the workbook is saved locally on your computer, save it to OneDrive or SharePoint first, then try sharing again.

    Reset OneDrive

    • Press Windows + R and run: %localappdata%\Microsoft\OneDrive\OneDrive.exe /reset
    • After OneDrive restarts, try sharing the file again.

Repair Microsoft Office, you can refer to this article for more detailed information Repair an Office application

Additionally, you may try removing Office-related credentials from Credential Manager:

Open Control Panel > Credential Manager > Windows Credentials

    User's image

Remove entries related to: Office, OneDrive, SharePoint, Microsoft Office.

Restart the PC and sign in again.

For more information: Share files and folders in Microsoft OneDrive

And as you mentioned you tried to share in Excel desktop app, could you please try to use Excel Web version to share and check whether the issue still persists or not.

I hope my information can help you resolve the issue. Please feel free to reach out if you have any other questions.

Error code 0x803d0014 when using File → Share → Share with People in Excel is typically caused by issues with the underlying sharing mechanism (OneDrive/SharePoint or mail client) rather than Excel itself. From the available information, the most relevant and common cause in similar scenarios is that the default mail or sharing client is not compatible with Office’s built‑in sharing features.

A frequent case is when the “New Outlook” app is set as the default mail client. New Outlook is not MAPI‑compliant and cannot be used by Office apps for sending or sharing files directly. In such cases, sharing from Word/Excel/PowerPoint fails with MAPI‑related or generic sharing errors.

To fix this, switch to the classic Outlook client and set it as the default mail program, then try sharing again:

    1. Open Outlook on Windows.
    2. If the New Outlook interface is in use, use the toggle at the top‑right corner labeled “New Outlook” to switch it off. This reverts to Classic Outlook.
    3. In Windows Settings → Apps → Default apps, ensure Outlook (classic) is set as the default for Email.
    4. Restart Excel.
    5. Open the workbook and try File → Share → Share with People again.

If the environment uses OneDrive/SharePoint link sharing instead of email, also verify that sharing is not blocked at the service level (for example, external sharing disabled or user not allowed to share), as this can also prevent link‑based sharing from working.
