Follow these steps in order on the Windows 11 desktop where audio stopped working:

    1. Check sound settings and default device
      1. Right-click the Speakers icon on the taskbar and select Open Volume mixer.
      2. Make sure none of the volume sliders are muted (no red circle with a line through it). If muted, click to unmute.
      3. Go to Start > Settings > System > Sound.
      4. Under Output, select the device being used (speakers/headset), then select Device properties.
      5. Make sure the Disable checkbox is not selected.
      6. If using USB/HDMI audio or an external monitor, open Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Sound, go to the Playback tab, right-click the correct audio device, select Set as Default Device, then select OK.
    2. Install all Windows and driver updates
      1. Select Start > Settings > Windows Update.
      2. Select Check for updates and install everything offered, including any audio driver updates.
      3. Restart the PC after updates complete.
    3. Update the audio driver via Device Manager
      1. Select Start, type Device Manager, and open it.
      2. Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
      3. Right-click the audio device (for example, Realtek, High Definition Audio), select Update driver.
      4. Select Search automatically for drivers and follow the prompts.
      5. Restart the PC.
    4. Reinstall the audio driver If updating did not restore sound:
      1. In Device Manager, expand Sound, video and game controllers.
      2. Right-click the audio device and select Uninstall device.
      3. If shown, check Attempt to remove the driver for this device, then select Uninstall.
      4. Restart the PC. Windows will automatically reinstall the audio driver.
    5. Try the generic Windows audio driver
      1. Open Device Manager and expand Sound, video and game controllers.
      2. Right-click the audio device and select Update driver.
      3. Select Browse my computer for drivers > Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer.
      4. Select the generic/high definition audio device listed, select Next, and complete the installation.
      5. Test audio again.
    6. If audio broke after a recent update
      1. Open Device Manager and expand Sound, video and game controllers.
      2. Right-click the audio device and select Properties.
      3. On the Driver tab, select Roll Back Driver (if available) and follow the prompts.
      4. Test audio after rollback.

If none of these steps restore audio, install the latest audio driver directly from the PC or motherboard manufacturer’s support site for Windows 11 and then restart.
