This morning I lost the ability to edit a word document. My account for Microsoft 365 is up to date, last payment was March 2026.

    Hello

Is it any file you have issue editing, or only certain file and file shared with you by others?

If it is any file, assuming this is on Windows? go to Files > Accounts in Word, click on Update License, sign in agian and see if that helps.

Based on similar cases, the most common cause when Word suddenly becomes view‑only even though documents opened fine before is a licensing/activation problem, not the document itself.

When Office cannot verify an active, valid subscription, it goes into reduced functionality mode: documents open and can be viewed and printed, but editing and saving are disabled.

    Take these steps:

    1. Confirm the subscription status
      • Close all Office apps (Word, Excel, etc.).
      • In a browser, go to the Microsoft account Subscriptions page and sign in with the same Microsoft account used in Word.
      • Verify that a Microsoft 365 subscription is listed as active.
      • If the subscription shown in Word is different from the one that is active (for example, an old work or school account), Word may still be tied to the wrong account.
    2. Check for subscription/activation warnings in Word
      • Open Word and look for a yellow bar at the top with messages such as:
        • “ACCOUNT NOTICE. We've run into a problem with your Microsoft 365 subscription and need your help to fix it.”
        • “Unlicensed Product” or other activation errors.
      • If you see the “Account Notice” bar, follow the payment/subscription fix steps in the referenced article (even if payment looks current) and then restart Word.
    3. If Word is tied to an old or invalid account
      • If Word is asking to “Sign in to Office” with an old work/school email or an account that no longer has a subscription, Word will remain read‑only.
      • In that case, remove the old account from Office and Windows, then reinstall and sign in with the account that has the active Microsoft 365 subscription, as described in the referenced Q&A:
        • Uninstall Office from Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
        • Disconnect any old work/school account from Settings → Accounts → Access work or school.
        • Remove old credentials from Control Panel → Credential Manager → Windows Credentials.
        • Restart, then reinstall Office from the account that owns the active subscription and sign in with that account in Word.
    4. If using a plan without desktop apps
      • If the current plan is Microsoft 365 Basic or Business Basic, these do not include desktop Word. Desktop apps will go into reduced functionality once a previous plan with desktop apps expires. In that case, editing in the desktop app will not be possible until upgrading to a plan that includes desktop apps (for example, Microsoft 365 Personal/Family or a business plan with desktop apps). The web version of Word remains available in a browser.

Once Word is correctly activated with an account that has an active plan including desktop apps, editing should be restored.
