One thing that has been driving me NUTS is that I cannot change my junk mail filtering and looking for a new job Im missing very important job opportunities because it send everything to junk mail. I cannot add and potential clients emails to the safe list because I cannot know the addresses job opportunities will come from. Ive had this email address since 1999 and i dont want to give it up but its messing ith my livelihood. I dont know what to do, last time i tried to resolve this I spent over an hour with an operator trying to fix this problem and not im running into this issue again looking for a job. Is there any real resolution or are we just all doomed to accept the fact that we have little to no control over our junk mail filters?? If anyone can help? if not im afraid i have to give up my life long email address that ive have had for over 26 years.

    Hi Christina Fuentesm,

    Welcome to Microsoft Q&A forum.

I’m sorry you’re dealing with this, especially while job searching. I also want to clarify the “classic version” part: the “classic Outlook” instructions usually refer to the older Outlook desktop app for Windows. If you are using Outlook.com in a browser, you will not see those same menus, so you should use the Outlook.com web settings instead. If you are having trouble with switching Outlook version, please also let me know.

First, please kindly check out the AI answer first to see if it helps. I will simplify it and also have some additional steps

Since recruiter or employer addresses are often unknown in advance, adding Safe Senders can help only after you know the sender or domain. For unknown job-related emails, please also check a few places that can affect delivery or visibility:

    • In Outlook.com, open Settings > Mail > Junk email and review both Safe senders and blocked senders.
    • Check Settings > Mail > Rules to make sure no rule is moving, deleting, or redirecting messages.
    • Check Settings > Mail > Forwarding to confirm mail is not being forwarded unexpectedly.
    • Use the search box to search for expected sender names, company names, or words from the job posting, then check Inbox, Junk Email, Deleted Items, and Archive.

If the messages are reaching Junk, marking them as Not junk may help going forward. But if important messages are not appearing anywhere at all, this is something that community members cannot verify from here because we do not have access to your mailbox delivery logs.

As a practical workaround, you may also want to use a second email address for applications and keep checking your long-time Hotmail/Outlook.com address at the same time.

Junk mail filtering in Outlook and Outlook.com can be adjusted and controlled, but there are limits because some filtering happens on the server before messages reach the mailbox.

To reduce the risk of missing job-related emails while still using junk filtering, adjust these settings and lists:

    1. Turn junk filtering to the least aggressive option (where available)
      • In classic Outlook for Windows, the Junk Email Filter is on by default and set to No Automatic Filtering. This is the least aggressive setting and relies mainly on your Safe/Blocked lists.
      • To check or change this:
        1. Select Home > Block > Junk Email Options.
        2. Ensure the protection level is set to No Automatic Filtering (or the lowest level available).
    2. Use Safe Senders and Safe Recipients lists
      • Messages from addresses or domains on the Safe Senders and Safe Recipients lists are never sent to the Junk Email folder.
      • In Outlook on the web / Outlook Web App:
        1. Select Settings > Mail.
        2. Go to Block or allow (or Junk email depending on the UI).
        3. Under Safe senders and recipients, enter email addresses or domains to trust, then select Add and Save.
      • In Outlook Web App Light:
        1. Go to Options > Junk Email.
        2. Under Safe Senders List, type an email address or domain and select Add.
        3. Under Safe Recipients List, add any mailing lists or groups that should never be treated as junk.
        4. Ensure Also trust email from my Contacts is selected if contacts should always be allowed.
    3. Review and clean up Blocked Senders
      • If a domain or address is incorrectly in the Blocked Senders List, all messages from it will go to Junk.
      • In Outlook on the web / Outlook Web App:
        1. Go to Settings > Mail > Block or allow (or Junk email).
        2. Under Blocked senders and domains, remove any entries that should not be blocked, then Save.
      • In Outlook Web App Light:
        1. Under Blocked Senders List, remove any legitimate senders or domains.
    4. Use the “Trust email from my contacts” option
      • In Outlook Web App / Outlook Web App Light, enable Trust email from my contacts (or Also trust email from my Contacts). This ensures messages from contacts are not treated as junk.
    5. Regularly check the Junk Email folder and mark mistakes as “Not junk”
      • Outlook’s Junk Email Filter learns from corrections:
        1. Periodically open the Junk Email folder.
        2. Drag legitimate messages back to the Inbox or another folder.
        3. In classic Outlook, select Home > Report > Not Junk on a misclassified message to help train the filter.
    6. Understand server-side filtering limits
      • The server that hosts the mailbox may apply junk filtering before messages reach Outlook or Outlook.com. This means some filtering cannot be completely disabled from the client side. However, Safe Senders and Safe Recipients lists, plus the lowest filter level, give the maximum control available.

These steps allow keeping the long‑used address while minimizing the chance that important job emails are lost in Junk. Regularly reviewing the Junk folder and expanding Safe Senders/Recipients is essential when expecting messages from unknown recruiters or employers.
