    • Your classic Outlook version/build.
    • Whether the Gmail account is personal Gmail or Google Workspace.
    • The exact error message shown in Outlook.

Use these checks and steps to get a Gmail POP account working in classic Outlook for Windows.

    1. Verify Gmail POP settings
      • In a browser, sign in to Gmail.
      • Select the gear icon > Settings > See all settings.
      • Go to Forwarding and POP/IMAP.
      • Under POP download, make sure POP is enabled (for all mail or for mail from now on).
      • Select Save changes.
    2. If Outlook shows generic connection errors
      • For classic Outlook, Gmail often requires an app password instead of the normal Google password when POP/IMAP is used.
      • Follow Google’s steps to create an app password for Outlook, then use that app password in Outlook instead of the regular Gmail password. (This is the same pattern described in the POP/IMAP troubleshooting and Q&A examples.)
    3. Remove and re‑add the Gmail account in classic Outlook
      • In some cases, removing the Gmail account and adding it again from inside Outlook (not via Control Panel) resolves broken authentication.
      • In classic Outlook:
        1. Go to File > Account Settings > Account Settings.
        2. Select the Gmail account and choose Remove.
        3. Choose Close.
        4. Still in Outlook, go to File > Add Account.
        5. Enter the Gmail address, choose Advanced options > Let me set up my account manually.
        6. Choose POP.
        7. Enter the app password created in step 2 when prompted.
        8. If automatic setup fails, choose Change Account Settings and enter the POP/SMTP details provided by Google, then Connect.
    4. If automatic setup still fails
      • Classic Outlook may fail automatic setup even with correct credentials. In that case, use the manual path described in the Outlook email setup troubleshooter:
        • File > Add Account.
        • Enter Gmail address > Advanced options > Let me set up my account manually.
        • Choose POP or IMAP.
        • Enter the Gmail POP/SMTP server names and ports from Google’s documentation.
        • Select Connect.
    5. If Outlook never prompts for a password or won’t connect
      • For IMAP accounts the guidance is to ensure Require logon using Secure Password Authentication (SPA) is unchecked; apply the same check for POP if available in the account properties.
      • If the profile is corrupted, recreate the account using Control Panel > Mail > Email Accounts… > New, then follow the same POP manual setup steps.

If all of the above are correct and Outlook still will not connect, contact Google support to confirm that POP access to the Gmail account is allowed and not blocked, as described for similar Gmail–Outlook issues.
