Try these steps in order on Windows 11 to get the microphone input device back:

    1. Check physical connections
    • If using a headset or external mic, make sure it is firmly plugged into the correct jack (pink for mic, green for speakers, or labeled “microphone”).
    • If USB, try a different USB port.
    • If headphones are plugged in, unplug them and see if the internal mic appears.
    1. Check microphone privacy settings
    • Select Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone.
    • Turn Microphone access On.
    • Turn Let apps access your microphone On.
    • Make sure Let desktop apps access your microphone is On if using desktop apps.
    1. Make sure a microphone is selected as input
    • Select Start > Settings > System > Sound.
    • Under Input, in Choose a device for speaking or recording, see if any microphone appears.
      • If it does, select it and test it using Start test under Microphone test.
      • If nothing appears, continue to the next step.
    1. Reinstall audio drivers (for missing input devices)
    • Right-click the Start button and select Device Manager.
    • Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
    • For each audio device listed:
      • Right-click it and select Uninstall device.
      • Check Delete the driver software for this device (or Attempt to remove the driver for this device) if available, then select Uninstall.
    • Restart the PC.
      • Windows will attempt to reinstall audio devices and drivers automatically.
    • If devices do not reappear:
      • Open Device Manager again, right-click Sound, video and game controllers, and select Scan for hardware changes.
    1. Update audio drivers
    • In Device Manager, under Sound, video and game controllers, right-click the audio driver and select Update driver.
    • After updating, go back to Settings > System > Sound and check Input again for a microphone device.
    1. Run audio/microphone troubleshooters
    • Select Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
    • Run the Audio troubleshooter.
    • Then in Settings > System > Sound, scroll to Troubleshoot common sound problems and run the troubleshooter for Input devices.

If the internal microphone still does not appear after these steps, there may be a device-specific driver or hardware issue that requires the laptop manufacturer’s support tools or service.
