Microsoft 365 features that help users manage their subscriptions, account settings, and billing information.
To move from a regular Microsoft 365 subscription to the discounted rate from the Microsoft Workplace Discount Program, first cancel or let the current subscription expire, then purchase using the Workplace Discount offer so the discount applies going forward.
Steps:
- Cancel or stop renewal of the current subscription
- Go to https://account.microsoft.com/services and sign in with the Microsoft account used for the current Microsoft 365 subscription.
- Under the Microsoft 365 subscription, select Cancel subscription (or Upgrade or Cancel).
- On the cancel page, review the Please review section, then choose I don't want my subscription to complete cancellation.
- If instead of Cancel there is only Turn on recurring billing, recurring billing is already off and the subscription will end on the shown expiry date; no further charges will be made.
- Understand what happens after cancellation
- After cancellation or expiry, Office apps eventually go into View Only mode: documents can be opened and printed, but not edited or newly created, and subscription services like extra OneDrive storage are lost. This also affects anyone the subscription was shared with.
- This behavior is described in Cancel your free trial of Microsoft 365 Family.
- Purchase with the Workplace Discount Program
- After cancellation is set (or once the subscription expires), use the Workplace Discount Program link or instructions provided by the employer to buy Microsoft 365 at the discounted rate.
- When purchasing through the employer’s offer, specify the same Microsoft account that is associated with the current/previous Microsoft 365 subscription so time and benefits align correctly. As noted in Switch between Microsoft 365 subscriptions, when purchasing through an employer offer, additional time is added and the discounted rate starts at renewal.
- If a refund is needed
- Some cancellations may be eligible for a refund after cancelling. Eligibility depends on the subscription and timing. To check eligibility, first cancel, then follow the guidance in How to get a refund on a Microsoft subscription.
If the subscription was obtained through a third party (such as a reseller or partner), cancellation and refund must be handled through that seller rather than directly in the Microsoft account.
