    Hi Courtney,

Thank you for reaching out regarding the issue with channel notes in Microsoft Teams.

In Teams channels, the Notes tab displays content from the team’s existing OneNote notebook. This error message usually indicates that the page or section has not fully synced yet. This can happen if the notebook hasn’t completely synced to SharePoint Online or OneDrive for Business, if the device is offline, if the account session has expired, or if the OneNote client is not syncing properly.

To help resolve this, please try the following steps:

1/ Try Teams on the web

Open Teams in your browser at https://teams.cloud.microsoft/ and navigate to the same channel notes. The web version connects directly to the server and is less affected by local cache issues. If the notes load there, the issue is likely with the desktop app.

2/ Sign out and sign back in

Click your profile picture in Teams, choose Sign out, then sign back in to refresh your session and permissions.

    3/ Clear Teams cache

    For Windows:

    • If Teams is still running, right-click the Teams icon on the taskbar and select Quit.
    • Press Windows + R to open the Run dialog box.
    • In the Run dialog box, enter the following path and click OK:

     %userprofile%\appdata\local\Packages\MSTeams_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalCache\Microsoft\MSTeams

    • Delete all files and folders in this directory.
    • Restart Teams.

    For macOS:

    • If Teams is still running, right-click the Teams icon in the dock and select Quit, or press Command + Q.
    • Open Finder > go to Applications > Utilities > double-click Terminal.
    • Enter the following commands, pressing Return after each one:

    rm -rf ~/Library/Group Containers/UBF8T346G9.com.microsoft.teams

    rm -rf ~/Library/Containers/com.microsoft.teams2

    • Restart Teams.

    4/ Open the Notebook directly

Try opening the same notebook in OneNote (web or desktop app) to confirm whether the issue is with the notebook itself or only within Teams.

5/ Check sync status in OneNote

In the desktop OneNote app, go to: File > Info > View Sync Status, then select Sync Now and review any sync errors.

    6/ Contact your IT admin

The message indicates that the channel’s notes tab (wiki/OneNote) content isn’t loading correctly in Teams. In current Teams, channel notes are moving from wiki to OneNote, and access issues can appear when that content is stored in OneNote or when the old wiki is being phased out.

    Try these steps, in order:

    1. Check if the channel is using the new Notes (OneNote) tab
      • In the channel, look at the tabs across the top.
      • If there is a Notes tab, select it. This tab is powered by OneNote and replaces wiki in new standard channels.
      • If the Notes tab opens, use the Show navigation option on the left to browse to the section/page for that channel’s notes.
    2. If the channel is still using a wiki tab (older channels)
      • Teams is phasing out wikis. Existing wiki content may still appear, but it can become unavailable or read‑only.
      • If the notes were originally created as meeting notes (not channel notes), access them this way:
        1. In Teams, go to Calendar on the left.
        2. Open the meeting or meeting series that used those notes.
        3. In the meeting pop‑up, select Chat with participants to open the meeting chat.
        4. At the top of that meeting chat, select Download from the banner to download the meeting notes file.
      • Alternatively, find the meeting chat under Chat on the left, open it, and use Download from the banner.
    3. Open and reuse the downloaded notes
      • Open the downloaded file in Microsoft Word (recommended, especially if characters look odd).
      • From there, either:
        • Save it as a Word document and share it, or
        • Copy the content into a new meeting’s notes or into a OneNote page in the channel’s Notes tab.
    4. If the notes are in a OneNote tab but still won’t load
      • There is a known limitation when accessing OneNote from Teams if the underlying document library has more than 5,000 OneNote items (notebooks, sections, section groups).
      • In that case, open the notebook directly in OneNote (web or desktop) instead of through Teams and work with the notes there. An admin or site owner can reduce the number of OneNote items in the library to restore access from Teams.

If none of these steps work, contact the team owner or IT admin. They can check whether the notes are stored in a OneNote notebook with too many items or in an old wiki that’s no longer accessible, and then move the content into the channel’s OneNote‑based Notes tab.
