Several common issues can cause Copilot to stop working after it has been functioning normally. Work through these checks depending on where Copilot is failing (Microsoft 365 apps, Windows, Dynamics 365, etc.).
- Verify Copilot license and sign-in
If Copilot has disappeared from Microsoft 365 apps (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote):- Make sure the signed-in account is the one that has the Copilot license.
- For home users, the account must have Microsoft 365 Personal or Family, or Copilot Pro.
- For business users, the account must have a supported Microsoft 365 subscription (Business Basic/Standard/Premium, E3/E5/F1/F3) and Microsoft 365 Copilot.
- In any Microsoft 365 app, go to File > Account and confirm the correct account is the primary one.
- Refresh the Copilot license
If the license is correct but Copilot is missing:- Windows desktop apps:
- Open any Microsoft 365 app.
- Go to File > Account.
- Select Update License.
- Close and restart all Microsoft 365 apps.
- Mac desktop apps:
- Open any Microsoft 365 app.
- Select the app name menu (for example, Word) at the top of the screen.
- Select About <app name> > More Info... > Refresh License.
- Close documents and restart all Microsoft 365 apps.
- Windows desktop apps:
- Check update channel and build (business users on Windows)
If Copilot suddenly stopped appearing in Outlook or other desktop apps:- Open any Microsoft 365 app and go to File > Account.
- In Product Information, check the update channel. Copilot features are not available on Semi-Annual Enterprise Channel.
- If Semi-Annual Enterprise Channel is shown, contact the internal help desk or Microsoft 365 admin to move the device to Current Channel or Monthly Enterprise Channel.
- Until the channel is changed, use the web versions of the apps, where Copilot remains available.
- Run Copilot troubleshooters in Windows
If Copilot icons are missing or connectivity errors occur:- Open the Get Help app in Windows.
- In the search bar, enter Copilot License Troubleshooter and follow the steps to verify licensing.
- If connection issues occur, search for Copilot connectivity troubleshooter and follow the steps to check for firewall or other blockers.
- Check privacy and connected experiences settings
If Copilot is missing in Microsoft 365 apps:- Windows:
- Open any Microsoft 365 app.
- Go to File > Account.
- Under Account Privacy, select Manage Settings.
- Ensure Experiences that analyze your content is turned on.
- Ensure All connected experiences is turned on.
- Mac (Word example):
- Open Word.
- Go to Word > Preferences > Privacy.
- Turn on Experiences that analyze your content.
- Turn on All connected experiences.
- Windows:
- If Copilot key or Windows Copilot stopped working
- On devices with a Copilot key (for example, Surface Pro 13-inch Flex Keyboard), check Windows settings to ensure the Copilot feature is turned on.
- If Copilot is not available or turned off, pressing the Copilot key will only launch Windows Search.
- Dynamics 365 Copilot scenarios (Sales or Field Service)
If Copilot stopped responding or the icon disappeared in Dynamics 365:- Dynamics 365 Sales:
- Republish the Copilot agent in Microsoft Copilot Studio if initial publishing may have failed.
- In the Power Platform admin center, check Data policies > Data loss prevention and ensure the Microsoft Dataverse and Direct Line channels in Copilot Studio connectors are unblocked and grouped together in the same policy (business or non-business).
- Dynamics 365 Field Service:
- If the Copilot icon is missing, a maker may have disabled it at the app level.
- Verify the user has at least Field Service – Dispatcher or Field Service – Resource security role.
- If Copilot isn’t generating responses, check that Dataverse and HTTP connectors are not blocked by DLP policies, data movement across regions is enabled when needed, and the environment is in a supported region.
- Dynamics 365 Sales:
- If issues persist
- For home users still seeing license validation errors after these steps, contact Support from the Copilot help pages.
- For business users, ask the Microsoft 365 admin to confirm Copilot licensing and open a support case with Microsoft if the problem continues.
