If you are unable to change the brightness on your laptop that usually indicates there is a problem with the graphics drivers, please provide some detail on your laptop model and hardware.

    1

Right click your Start Button and open Device Manager.

    Expand the 'Display Adapters' section.

Please provide a screenshot of that full Device Manager window.

    2

Click your Start Button, then just type msinfo and press Enter, please provide a screenshot of the resulting System Information window.

    Try these steps in order:

    1. On the right side of the taskbar, select the Network icon, then move the Brightness slider.
    2. If that does not help, go to Start > Settings > System > Display and adjust Brightness there.
    3. If the laptop changes brightness on its own, in Settings > System > Display > Brightness:
      • Turn off brightness automatically when lighting changes if that option appears.
      • In Windows 11, check Change brightness based on content and set it to Off if sudden brightness changes are distracting.
    4. If the brightness slider is missing or does not work, update the display driver:
      • Type Device Manager in the taskbar search box and open it.
      • Expand Display adapters.
      • Right-click the display adapter and select Update driver.
    5. If the problem started after an update and still continues, in Device Manager > Display adapters > display adapter Properties > Driver, try Roll back driver. If needed, choose Update driver and select an older driver from the list.
    6. If the laptop is using Microsoft Basic Display Adapter, install the correct graphics driver from the laptop manufacturer and restart. That adapter usually means the proper graphics driver is not installed.
    7. If using an external monitor, Windows may not show a brightness slider. In that case, adjust brightness using the monitor’s physical buttons.

If auto-brightness stopped working after a recent Windows update, a temporary workaround is to manually move the brightness slider once or press a brightness hotkey. Plugging in or unplugging power can also reactivate it.
