I purchased Office for Mac (full cost, not a subscription) and have been using it. In recent days all my files have become View-only. How do I fix this?

Please uninstall your Office apps. To uninstall, you move all Office apps, like Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams to trash bin.

Then install this slightly older version 16.114: https://res.public.onecdn.static.microsoft/mro1cdnstorage/C1297A47-86C4-4C1F-97FA-950631F94777/MacAutoupdate/Microsoft_365_and_Office_16.114.26101123_BusinessPro_Installer.pkg?atp=ets

This is legitimate URL extracted from official source: https://learn.microsoft.com/officeupdates/update-history-office-for-mac

After that, open any Office app, such as Word or Excel. From the top menu, select Help > Check for Updates. When Microsoft AutoUpdate opens, uncheck Automatically keep Microsoft apps up to date, then confirm by clicking Turn Off.

That should work. If for any reason it doesn't, open one of the apps, for example, Excel > About Microsoft Excel > More Info > Refresh License.

Check Word > About Word first, because Office 2021 version 16.114.1 requires a different recovery path from other view-only activation cases.

If this is Office 2021 version 16.114.1

If About Word shows Office 2021 and version 16.114.1, and editing stopped after that update, recent Microsoft Q&A cases report that rolling back to 16.114 restores the perpetual license. This is a Microsoft-hosted community workaround, not a formally confirmed support fix.^1^

    1. Quit every Office application.
    2. Open Finder > Applications.
    3. Move Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and the other Office applications to Trash.
    4. Install the reported working 16.114 package directly from Microsoft: https://res.public.onecdn.static.microsoft/mro1cdnstorage/C1297A47-86C4-4C1F-97FA-950631F94777/MacAutoupdate/Microsoft_365_and_Office_16.114.26101123_BusinessPro_Installer.pkg?atp=ets
    5. Open Word and sign in with the Microsoft account associated with the Office 2021 purchase.
    6. Select Help > Check for Updates. In Microsoft AutoUpdate, temporarily turn off Automatically keep Microsoft apps up to date to prevent 16.114.1 from being reinstalled.^2^

Temporarily disabling updates has a security and maintenance tradeoff. Re-enable updates when Microsoft publishes a corrected build or current guidance says the issue is resolved.

For any other Office 2021 or Microsoft 365 build

Microsoft documents a separate reduced-functionality issue in which Office can view and print files but cannot edit or save them. The supported recovery is to update macOS first and then Office:^3^

    1. Select Apple menu > System Settings > General > Software Update.
    2. Install available macOS updates. The documented minimum is macOS 12 Monterey.
    3. Open Word and select Help > Check for Updates.
    4. In Microsoft AutoUpdate, select Update All.
    5. Completely quit Word with Command+Q, then reopen it.
    6. Open the application’s Account settings, sign out, and sign back in using the Microsoft account connected to the one-time purchase.

Do not use this update branch if the Mac is currently running Office 2021 version 16.114.1 and the failure began with that update; use the rollback above instead.

    Check the installation source

If Word came from the Mac App Store, remove it and install the Microsoft-direct version. Mac App Store builds of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint require a Microsoft 365 subscription and are incompatible with one-time Office licenses.^4^

    1. Quit Office.
    2. In Finder > Applications, move the Office applications to Trash.
    3. Sign in to the Microsoft account where the purchase was redeemed.
    4. Under the purchased products, choose Install for Office 2021.
    5. Install, open Word, and activate using that same account.

Reset licensing if the purchase is listed but activation still fails

Before resetting anything, verify that the one-time Office purchase appears under the Microsoft account used to redeem it. Then use Microsoft’s License Removal Tool:^5^

    1. Quit all Office applications.
    2. Download and run the Office License Removal Tool from the referenced Microsoft Support page.
    3. Follow the installer prompts and enter the Mac administrator password if requested.
    4. Open Word and sign in using the account associated with the one-time purchase.
    5. If offered multiple licenses, select the one-time Office license.
    6. Restart the Mac and test editing.

The tool removes all Office licenses stored on that Mac, so have the licensed account credentials available first. If the perpetual product remains listed in the account but activation still fails after the applicable rollback or update, Microsoft Support will need to check the purchase-to-account activation record.
