Visio 2019 freezes, High ram- cpu- and disk usage

Hello

I am using Microsoft Visio 2019, when I have a project with a decent amount of object 50-100 object plus connectors and I try to zoom with the trackpad. Shortly after its done zooming the program freezes and it will say visio has stopped working in the top and then hole computer gets slow and laggy and when I look on the task manager it says something is using all of my RAM (32GB) and then shortly after the CPU usage goes up to 100% and then the Disk usage goes up to 100%, and then after some 15 seconds they all fall down and sometimes Visio begins to work again, other times it crashes.
I have a Dell XPS 17 9700 with I7-10875 8-core processor and the 32GB of RAM.

I dont know how to use the tags...sorry

I have the same problem with Visio Pro 2021 (version 2304).

When zooming or moving more than say 100 objects, it's the apocalypse in my computer.

Ryzen 5600x with 16 Gb ram.

I found a solution in another thread

You need to close Visio then delete registry key HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Office \ 16.0 \ Common \ ExperimentConfigs \ Ecs \ visio \ ConfigContextData

This will activate the hardware graphics acceleration feature (you can check in Visio in advanced options menu)

Interesting... I noticed before I posted, that there was not graphics acceleration to enable or disable (like I see suggested often with this issue in past years). I'll give that a go and update again.

That seemed to work. Before this there was no option to "Disable hardware graphics acceleration" But after deleting what you mentioned above, it is now showing.

Performance is back to normal. And so far it doesn't matter if I have hardware acceleration enabled or disabled, still works well. I'll have to save this in case it happens again. Good snag and thank you for posting!!!

Thanks but before I delete that part of the registry I just want to check that as it contains about 45 individual files do I need to back them up somewhere, if so how?

I deleted that registry key and the program worked fine. However the same problem arose and I found that the registry key had been recreated. Can I stop this happening please?

This fix was not permanent and my pc eventually froze again similar to what Tony had described. I thought it did have something with the hardware graphics acceleration, and so the fix for me was an update of the graphics card driver.

I have the same problem with Thien & Tony. Deleting the registry key temporarily solves the problem. However, the registry key is created even without rebooting the PC. Simply working with Visio. The problem initially started with Visio 2019, after the 25th April 2023 Visio update (version 2304). The update on 9th May 2023 didn't solve the problem (I am using Visio 6 days per week during the last months), and although the problem improved when I upgraded to Visio 2021 it was not solved. Rarely my computer may even crash and needs reset from the case button. I had to decrease autosave time it order to avoid losing my work. My file was almost unusable some days using Visio 2019. I was really helpless for a couple of days. Impressively, I could work for some hours without any problem and almost suddenly, my Visio was becoming responsiveless. I couldn't figure out what was the problem. The same problem is observed both in my home and work PC but not in the PC of one of my colleagues (who is using the same file with me). Adding a graphics card (instead of using the onboard one) didn't solve the problem. At the moment, any time the problem occurs, I have to delete the registry key, and the problem is temporarily solved, until it happens again. I have performed any actions suggested in the Microsoft support website. I hope the next update to solve the problem

I went into the registry and deleted that exact portion of the registry but the checkbox to hardware graphics acceleration did not appear. What do?

Please update your Visio to the latest version first, and then please confirm the following information with us.

Is there any error message when Visio 2019 freezes?

Does the issue occur in all Visio files or only in a specific file?

When did this issue start? Have you installed any third-party programs beofre this issue? Such as third-party Add-ins.

Please try the following steps to check this issue:

Open the Visio app, and go to File> Options> Advanced to check Disable Hardware Graphics Acceleration option under Display group.

Open the file in safe mode to check this issue: Press Win + R to open Run app and type visio /safe, click OK and then open the file to have a check.

A damaged temporary file may cause Visio to freeze or crash. You can open File Explorer and go to %userprofile%\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Visio. Back up and remove these damaged temporary files to check for this issue.

If none of the above does works, please repair your Visio online to check again.

I have pretty much the same issue. Visio 2019 locks up frequently. It will sometimes come back to life on its own, but most often it does not. I will either have to close it manually by right-clicking on the icon in the taskbar and selecting close, or by using Task Manager. About 25% of the time it gets so bad that it bluescreens the entire computer.

I also do not have the Disable Hardware Graphics Acceleration option under File> Options> Advanced> Display group.

I have exactly the same problem. I changed the graphics card (Quadro K4200 to Quadro P400) and checked the memory (memtest). I have installed the latest updates for Visio.
The problems started with Visio 2016. I then uninstalled Visio 2016 and installed Visio 2019. Unfortunately, I still have the same problem. In safe mode the problem also occurs. Removing the temp-files did not help.
The same vsdx-file on another PC with Quadro P400 has no problems
I have a AMD Ryzen 5600X with 16 GB of RAM and Windows 10 21H1. Office 365, AutoCAD and all other programs works fine.

I'm having exactly the same issue, Nvidia RTX 2070 super 15gb, ryzen 7 3700X. Anytime I cntrl mouse wheel zoom RAM consumption goes to max real ram and system starts paging.

Coincidence, I was just looking around for answers to this issue (that I see today for the first time) and saw this post. No answers so far, but this just started to happen to me today (May 5). Never happened before. But now Visio CPU usage goes way up and application stops responding (can't zoom in/out or even select anything on the screen). Sometimes the Visio process will even show "Not Responding". I wonder if there was a recent update that is causing this. And when I go into "Help" menu, it takes forever for anything to show up if I choose any option (like What's New or Feedback, etc.). Visio just got real BAD!!! Version 2304 (Build 16327.20214)... and based on above...BAD AGAIN!!!

Same for me. The issue started today, Visio 2021 version 2304. I have tried to disable antivirus, upgrade graphics drivers, anything that can really freeze the system. No change.

I was helped by running visio in compatibility mode with windows 8. Freezes have become less frequent and shorter.
