The following table shows improvements to messaging.

Item Description
Desktop ActiveSync 4.1

(Pocket PC and Smartphone)

Provides an updated user interface to support direct push technology and certificate authentication for Exchange synchronization.
Desktop ActiveSync Unlock Behavior

(Pocket PC and Smartphone)

Specifies the behavior for unlocking a locked Windows Mobile-based device when it is connected to a desktop computer running ActiveSync. With this mechanism, a Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 SP2 administrator can provision the device with a policy that requires an end user to authenticate on the device instead of using a PIN which might be entered and stored on the desktop computer. This mechanism reduces the risk of password interception between the desktop computer and the device.
Local Wipe Provisioning

(Pocket PC and Smartphone)

Provides an Exchange Server 2003 SP2 administrator with the capability to implement a local wipe policy. This policy wipes the flash drive for the Windows Mobile-based device if an end user fails authentication too many times.

Prior to the final authentication attempt, a message displays that notifies an end user that the end user only has one opportunity to authenticate successfully before the device auto-reboots and reformats the flash drive.

When too many failed authentication attempts occur, the user is prompted periodically to enter a previously-defined passcode.

Device-Based Authentication

(Pocket PC and Smartphone)

Provides a third party with the ability to create a plugin that enables alternative authentication methods on the device, for example biometric or smartcard authentication.
Direct Push Technology

(Pocket PC and Smartphone)

Provides a continuous connection through a mobile operator between a Windows Mobile-based device and a server that is running Exchange Server 2003 SP2. This continuous connection provides real-time access and synchronization with e-mail, contacts, and calendar items as changes occur on the Exchange account for an end user. Also provides an end user of a data-capable phone device with the capability to synchronize tasks, photos, and SMS addresses within contacts.
End-to-End Certificate-based Enrollment Tool for ActiveSync

(Pocket PC and Smartphone)

Provides a method for a Windows Mobile-based device to request the Certificate Authority information needed by the device so that the device knows the certificate server from which to request a certificate.
Exchange 2003 SP2 enhancements for Windows Mobile-based devices Provides server-side provisioning and support for direct push technology, remote and local device locking and wiping, and other messaging and security enhancements. For information about Microsoft Exchange Server, see this Microsoft Web site.
Exchange Server Policy Provisioning

(Pocket PC and Smartphone)

Provides a protocol command through which a server that is running Exchange Server 2003 SP2 and a Windows Mobile-based device can negotiate policy settings. This protocol command provides the server with the capability to provision the Windows Mobile-based device, including authentication, idle time, device lock, desktop ActiveSync unlock behavior, and device wipe settings.
Global Address List

(Pocket PC and Smartphone)

Provides an end user with the capability to look up contacts in the corporate global address list (GAL) through the existing Contacts application and through contact choosers, for example Inbox and Calendar Attendee. This contact information can be used with e-mail, text messages, calls, and meeting creation. The user interface for this functionality is available when Exchange ActiveSync is enabled on the device and the user synchronizes the device with a server running Exchange Server 2003 SP2.

A developer that uses Contact Chooser in an application can use the CHOOSECONTACT flag CCF_ENABLEGAL to specify whether to provide an end user with the option of searching for contact items in the online GAL.

Inactivity Time or Idle Time Provisioning

(Pocket PC and Smartphone)

Provides a setting that specifies the amount of idle time, in minutes, before the Windows Mobile-based device automatically locks.
Password Settings Provisioning

(Pocket PC and Smartphone)

Provides policy settings that affect the default Microsoft local authentication plugin (LAP). The Microsoft LAP provides the following types of password enforcement that can be configured with policies on the Exchange Server:
  • Minimum password length
  • Strong alphanumeric or simple PIN.
Remote Wipe

(Pocket PC and Smartphone)

Provides a policy for the Exchange 2003 SP2 server administrator that forces the Windows Mobile-based device to reboot and reformat flash memory.
S/MIME

(Pocket PC and Smartphone)

Provides message security based on Secure/Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions (S/MIME). S/MIME is only supported through the use of CAC cards and third party software. The administrator provisions the card with a certificate. When an end user inserts the card into the Windows Mobile-based device, the certificates are imported into the My Certificate store on the device. The S/MIME user interface is always present on the device but is only visible if the server is running Exchange Server 2003 SP2.
Support for Certificate-Based Authentication

(Pocket PC and Smartphone)

Provides an administrator with the capability to implement certificate-based authentication when a Windows Mobile-based device synchronizes with a server running Exchange 2003 SP2. The Exchange server administrator creates a configuration XML file that includes the Certificate Authority Server Name, Certificate Template to be used, and other settings, for example custom Web enrollment URLs. The device downloads the certificate through ActiveSync 4.1 on the desktop computer. With certificate-based authentication, a device can synchronize directly with the Exchange server using a certificate instead of network credentials. Without the certificate, the device can still synchronize e-mail messages and items through Outlook by using the default ActiveSync partnership with the desktop computer.
Actionable E-Mail Header

(Pocket PC and Smartphone)

Provides an end user with the capability to put focus on or select the name of the e-mail sender in the header of an e-mail message. An end user can then either respond to the e-mail sender directly or be prompted to add the e-mail sender as a contact.
Read and Compose Messaging Forms Improvements

(Pocket PC and Smartphone)

Provides the following improvements:
  • Use of a single scrolling window that queues the message to the name of the sender.
  • Hiding of secondary fields by default, for example To, Cc, Bcc, and Date.
  • Insertion of attachments below the Subject line.
  • Truncation of long e-mail addresses.
  • In message reading, friendly name formatting of the sender name and recipient names.
  • In message composition, support for an end user to open new messages for the current account only.

An end user can no longer switch accounts while in compose mode.

E-mail Account Setup Improvements

(Pocket PC and Smartphone)

Provides an end user with the capability to configure e-mail settings on a Windows Mobile-based device so that an end user can download e-mail from a public POP/IMAP e-mail provider, for example an internet service provider (ISP), mobile operator, or broadband provider.

Provides the following improvements with Windows Mobile Version 5.0:

  • Separate SMTP server name, domain, and credentials.
  • Autoconfiguration for Windows Mobile-based Smartphone.
  • Download prompting on Windows Mobile-based Smartphone.
  • Enhanced setup wizard user interface that exposes trapping of attempts to set up Hotmail.
  • Extraction of autoconfiguration server information.
Managed Wrappers for MAPI

(Pocket PC and Smartphone)

Provides an application developer who writes applications using managed code with the capability to send e-mail and SMS from within an application.
Inbox Terminology Changes for ActiveSync, SMS, and Inbox

(Pocket PC and Smartphone)

Changes the default terminology for SMS to Text Messaging. An original equipment manufacturer (OEM) can configure this term and use a common term throughout the user interface. This standardization simplifies end user navigation and provides opportunity for manufacturer and mobile operator customization.
Inbox Messaging Account Navigation Improvements

(Smartphone Only)

Improves messaging account navigation within the Inbox application by displaying the Switch accounts and Folders actions as top-level menu items within Inbox.
Global SMS Delivery Confirmation Setting

(Pocket PC and Smartphone)

Provides an end user with an SMS delivery confirmation message for every SMS message sent from the Windows Mobile-based device. Previously, this functionality was available only on a per-message basis.
Inbox List View Menu Extensibility

(Smartphone Only)

Adds support for different and new functions accessible from the soft key menu when an end user views lists of messages within Inbox.

Saving Contact Information from E-mail

(Pocket PC Only)

Provides improvements to e-mail address saving from the messaging client to the Contacts database.
OMA DM EMAIL Configuration Service Provider

(Pocket PC and Smartphone)

Provides support for OMA DM standard XML to configure e-mail in addition to e-mail configuration via a WAP Push configuration service provider. A Windows Mobile–based device uses configuration service providers to provision application settings.
Inbox Navigation Improvements Among E-mail Accounts

(Pocket PC Only)

Provides separate Tools and Accounts menus to assist an end user in switching, creating, or managing e-mail accounts. Other options and folder management now appear under Tools.
Account Options Extensibility

(Pocket PC and Smartphone)

Provides a third-party messaging transport provider with the capability to present a custom account options Control Panel application from the account list within Messaging.
