Learn About Voice Mail Notifications

Applies to: Office 365 for enterprises, Microsoft Exchange

There are two types of voice mail notifications: text message and e-mail. When you receive a call but the caller doesn't leave a voice mail message, you can receive a missed call notification in an e-mail message that's delivered to your Inbox. You can also set up text message notifications so that voice mail and missed call notifications will be sent to your mobile phone.

Receiving Missed Call and Voice Mail Notifications

You can receive notifications about missed calls and voice messages on your mobile phone and in e-mail using a Web browser or an e-mail client. You can receive an e-mail notification when someone calls you on your office or mobile phone but doesn't leave a voice message. Also, when you miss a phone call, you can receive a text message notification or a voice message on your mobile phone.

E-Mail Notifications

A missed call notification is an e-mail message that's sent to your mailbox when you don't answer an incoming call. This is a different e-mail message than the e-mail message that contains the voice message that's left for you. You can specify whether you want to receive missed call notification messages by selecting the Send an e-mail to my Inbox when I miss a phone call check box as shown below.

MissedCallEmail

When this box is selected, you'll receive missed call notifications when callers try to contact you but don't leave voice messages. In most cases, you'll also see a missed call notification on your mobile phone from your mobile phone provider.

For more information, see Turn On or Off Missed Call Notifications.

Text Message Notifications

Short Messaging Service (SMS), also known as text messaging, is a way to communicate using mobile phones. You can set up your account to send text messages to your mobile phone when you miss a call, receive a voice message, or receive a meeting request. This feature is currently available in the United States and China. More countries will be supported in the future.

You can set up your account to send you a text message when you miss a call or receive a voice message. After you've set this up, you'll receive a text message with the date and time of the missed call in addition to the phone number or contact name of the caller. If you receive a voice message, you'll receive a text message with the date and time of the voice message, the phone number or contact name of the caller, and the length of the voice message.

The text messages that are sent to your mobile phone using Outlook voice mail will contain a text preview of the voice message that was left. The format of the text message that's sent to your mobile phone and the length of the text preview depend on the model of your mobile phone and your mobile service provider.

There are several options for setting up text message notifications for voice mail. The following settings are used to set up notifications for voice mail messages and missed calls that you receive:
