Choose a separator character

When you import or link to data in plain-text files, you also need to select the separator character. You are prompted to select the separator character after you have selected the source file in the Import Data, Link Data, Import Territories, or Link Territories wizards.

Note   The fields in a plain-text file (*.txt, *.csv, *.asc, or *.tab format) must be separated by only one of the following delimeters: comma (,), semicolon (;), or tab.

1. In the Choose the character that separates your fields field, click Tab, Semicolon, or Comma.

2. Verify that your data is organized correctly by reviewing the Data Preview box.

   Note   For example, if your data contained names and addresses, all names should be in one column and all addresses in another.

3. If your data doesn't appear the way you expect it to, do one of the following:

   • Choose a different separator character.

   • Click Cancel, modify your source file, and then start the import or link process again.
