Notes

The management utilities in this package are generally incompatible with File-Based Write Filter (FBWF) and Enhanced Write Filter with HORM (EWF). Any changes that you make by using management utilities might not be persisted.

If both this package and Domain Services are installed on a device, it is capable of performing disk-management and storage-management tasks on other devices that it might be connected to. Therefore, we recommend that this combination of packages only be installed on devices that also include functionality that can help to protect the device from unauthorized access. For example, only install this combination of packages if the device includes functionality that is provided by Application Security, Credentials and Certificate Management, Network Access Protection, Windows Firewall, or similar security functionality.

By default, the Disk Defragmenter service startup type is set to Disabled as shown in the Services snap-in. If you want to control the service from the command line, such as with net start defragsvc, you must first change the value of the registry entry Start (DWORD) from 4 to 3. This entry is located under the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\services\defragsvc subkey.

To use the Shrink Volume feature of the Disk Management snap-in, you must first start the Disk Defragmenter service.
